Dr. McKenna has been counseling at SLUH since 1988. He holds a Ph.D. in Counseling with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Louis University. In addition to his regular duties with students, he coordinates the Care Team, a weekly meeting of counselors and administrators to support students in need. Beyond counseling, folk music is his avocation. Dr. McKenna learned guitar while singing and recording with The St. Louis Jesuits and has been a member of the College Church Choir since 1975. His musical interests gravitated toward traditional Irish music in the 1980s. He plays fiddle, whistle, banjo, bodhran (Irish drum) and mandolin. Though not as fleet of foot as he used to be, he still loves to play handball, soccer, frisbee and basketball. You may occasionally see him on a bike, though he is not a long-distance runner. Dr. McKenna has three daughters. They attend Carleton College, Macalester College and Earlham College, respectively, and have often performed Irish music and dance with him, though college is breaking up the band. His wife, Becky, is a counselor/marriage and family therapist/professor.
