SLUH captures title at Gateway City Soccer Classic
Coming off a tough loss in the semifinals of the CYC tournament to Oakville, the varsity soccer team looked forward to the prestigious Gateway City Soccer Classic as the perfect opportunity to get back to their winning ways. The tournament, partially hosted at SLUH, featured some of the top ranked teams in the country.
Opening night found the Jr. Bills facing cross-state Jesuit rival and 12th ranked (NSCA National Poll) Rockhurst. A back and forth game found the score tied at 2 when time expired. That is when the drama began. A penalty kick shootout was needed to determine the winner and SLUH was able to outlast the Hawklets in a dramatic 9-8 shootout victory.
The next round found the Jr. Bills facing an upset minded Quincy (IL) squad that gave SLUH everything they had before bowing to SLUH by a 2-0 score.
The championship game Saturday afternoon at CBC had SLUH face off against 19th ranked (NSCA National Poll) and traditional Kansas power St. Thomas Aquanis of Overland Park, KS. The Jr. Bills could smell a second tournament championship for this season in the air and were able to defeat the Saints 1-0.
SLUH (14-3) looks to continue their winning ways at Francis Howell North on October 7th at 6 pm.
