Jr. Bills Beat Vianney, Then Fall To Statesmen in District Final
On Wednesday night, February 20, the Jr. Billiken varsity basketball team played the Vianney Golden Griffins for the 3rd time this season. The Jr. Billikens were hoping to build on their previous success, having beaten Vianney both times. The game did not start out well as the Jr. Bills dug themselves into an 11-0 deficit. The team, sparked by junior Darrin Young, scrapped back to trail by only 3 at halftime. In the second half the game seesawed back and forth. This was the type of game that the team with the ball last was going to win the game. Vianney had a chance to build on a 3 point lead with a under 2 minutes remaining, but missed a few free throws that could have put the game out of reach. Andy Hill capitalized with a bank 3-pointer with about 18 seconds remaining to tie the game. The Griffins had a chance to win it, but missed an open look and the Jr. Bills rebounded and called timeout with 3.6 seconds remaining. Darrin Young took the inbounds pass and took two dribbles, then attempted to hoist a desperation shot just over half court. Vianney, in an attempt to make things difficult, tried to foul before the shot, having a foul to give. Fortunately for the Jr. Bills, the foul took place on the shot. Darrin Young calmly knocked down all three free throws with 1.1 seconds remaining to win the game 38-35. That gave the team a second chance at the Webster Groves Statesmen in the district championship. Unfortunately, the result was similar as Webster beat the Jr. Bills again. It was the end of the line for this year's team. Good luck and thank you seniors.
SLUH Defeats Vianney on Senior Night
On a night honoring the 8 seniors, the SLUH Varsity Basketball team beat the Vianney Golden Griffins for the second time in as many attempts. The senior players: Eric Devlin, Andy Hill, Luis Soffner, Ben Evans, and managers: Matt Cochrane, Harry Pettey, Drew Blackmon, and Riley O'Neill have been a real asset to the SLUH basketball program. Thank you seniors. As for the game, the Jr. Bills looked to be on cruise control during the first half, building a 28-15 lead. The Golden Griffins would not go away as they fought and clawed back to within 4 at one point. The Jr. Bills free throw shooting helped to ice the game and the MCC victory by a score of 50-43. A balanced attack was led by Luis Soffner and Darrin Young with 10. Tim Cooney had 9 points and Andy Hill and Eric Devlin added 8 and 7 points each. The two teams will meet on in the first round of districts a week from Wednesday at Webster High School at 6:00. Next action for the Jr. Bills is Monday against the DuBourg Cavaliers at 6:00 pm.
SLUH Hand Chaminade First Conference Loss
Earlier in the week, the Jr. Bills varsity basketball team played one of the hottest teams in the area. The Kirkwood Pioneers have won 10 of 12 and looked to avenge an early season 15 point loss to the Jr. Bills. In a nip and tuck game, the Pioneers squeaked out a 52-51 victory with some clutch shooting. Tim Cooney and Eric Devlin led the Jr. Bills in scoring with 16 and 13 points each. On Friday night, the team headed to Chaminade. With neither school in session during the day, the student crowds were down. They certainly missed a tremendous game. The Jr. Bills came out on fire in the first three quarters building a 14 point lead going into the 4th. The Chaminade pressure and some missed free throws made it interesting, but the Jr. Bills prevailed with a well-deserved 65-58 win. The team is in action next tomorrow night at CBC. Gametime is 6:00 pm.
Jr. Bills Split Weekend Games
Friday night, the Junior Bills welcomed the CBC Cadets to the Backer Memorial for an MCC contest. The Jr. Bills took a 3 point halftime lead, sparked by the return of senior Luis Soffner, who missed a few days because of retreat. In the second half, the team struggled shooting the ball from the field, but kept the game close. In the end, CBC's free throw shooting kept the game out of reach and the team fell 46-40. There was no time to relax as the Jr. Bills made the long trip down Grand Ave. to visit the St. Mary's Dragons. This always proves to be a tough test, and Saturday night was no exception. SLUH took a 10 point lead into the 4th quarter, but the Dragons fought back to tie the score with only a few seconds remaining. In overtime, the Jr. Bills outscored St. Mary's 11-1 to grab an impressive road win. The team is now 2-0 in overtime games this year. The Jr. Bills are next in action on Tuesday evening at home against a revived Gateway Tech team that just defeated number 1 McCluer North on Monday. Gametime is 6:00 pm.

The second half began the way the first half did with the Cadets scoring the first six points and the Jr. Bills falling behind by 9. The Jr. Bills were not going to go down easily and turned up the intensity level to make a game of it in the 4th quarter. They got as close as two in the final minute, but some clutch CBC free throw shooting iced the 41-47 victory. John Swanston had 12 points and 7 rebounds, Tim Cooney added 11 and Cecil Edward had 8 points and 9 rebounds. Next action Friday at Vianney.

Jr. Bills Outlast Jays
On Friday night at St. Louis U. High, the Jr. Bills looked to erase the disappointment of Tuesday's loss to Gateway. Their opponent, the Jefferson City Jays were fresh off of a victory over DeSmet, would not make it an easy task. The Jr. Bills struggled in the first quarter trailing 13-8, but turned up the defense in the second quarter allowing only 4 points and tying the score at 17. With the score tied at 26 going into the 4th, the jays went on a quick 7-2 run to take a 5 point lead midway through the quarter. With some solid execution and a perfect 8 for 8 from the free throw line, the Jr. Bills went on a 13-2 run to put the game out of reach. The Jays hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer to close out the scoring 41-38. It was a good victory for the B-team as they head down the stretch with 4 conference games. Chaminade is first up Friday.
