Latin Club

GENERAL INFORMATION:

The Latin Club was started in 1981-82 with a membership of 40 students. Since then, the club typically attracts over 100 members each year. The purpose of the club is to promote Latin, and for the students to have fun. Highlights of the year include the election of club officers at which candidates spend considerable amounts of money on a veritable plethora of enticements to coax voters to cast their ballots in their favor, the Saturnalia (a toga party that includes SLUH, Cor Jesu, Nerinx, Ursuline and St. Joseph's), and the Missouri Junior Classical League State Latin Convention to which SLUH sends a delegation to participate in the Certamen competition (a Quiz Bowl-type of academic competition). The motto of the club is "Edamus Bibamus Guadeamus."

Salvete discipuli! Last spring was an exciting time for the Latin and Greek students who participated in a plethora of state and national tests. On the National Latin Exam SLUH had 37 students who earned gold medals and Summa Cum Laude certificates, 39 winners of silver medals and Maxima Cum Laude certificates and 38 students who earned Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude certificates. There was also one student - John Sachs (freshman) who achieved a perfect score. Three seniors - Tim Gallagher, Sam King and Steve Schumacher - had earned gold medals on the NLE all 4 years and were awarded a gift of the Oxford Classical Dictionary by the NLE committee.

Of the 25 seniors who took the National Greek Exam, 3 students earned blue (highest honors) ribbons, 7 earned red (high honors) ribbons and 8 earned green (high merit) ribbons - a remarkable feat for first year Greek students!

On the state written tests, sponsored by the Missouri Junior Classical League there was 1 first place gold trophy winner, 5 silver medal winners, and several bronze medal winners in areas as diverse as Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Derivatives, History and Culture and Mythology. Seniors Tim Guntli and Tim Gallagher swept the top places in Grammar, finishing first and second respectively. In addition to the state written tests SLUH students participated in the Certamen competition (a quiz bowl style contest) at the MOJCL Convention held in Columbia, Mo. on April 26. The Varsity (senior-junior), Sophomore and Freshman Dream Teams all competed in the final round of the competitiion. In an exciting finish the Freshman team won first place in the state, bringing home trophies and gold medals. It was a great day for the SLUH teams and the students are already planning their strategy for next year’s contest!

Overall 2007-2008 was a great year for the Classics students at SLUH - they worked hard and their work resulted in a myriad of honors and awards. I am looking forward to another fine year in '08- '09 when our students prove once again that Lingua Latina (et lingua Graeca) vivit!

Magistra
