Membership Criteria

NHS Membership Criteria

Members must

  • maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.60 or higher,
  • actively participate in three activities (two of which must be SLUH related).  These activities must meet regularly and require active participation and involvement (CSP qualifies as an actvity only if the student serves 10 hours more than the hours required; see below),
  • demonstrate highest standards of behavior, honesty, and reliability.
  • serve the community with the ministry of presence at any of the NHS-approved service agencies (click here to see the list of approved agencies):
    • Sophomores: 20+ hours (for students seeking membership sophomore year)
    • Juniors: 32+ hours (for members and students seeking membership junior year)
    • Seniors: 32+ hours

Process to be considered for membership in 2013:

  • Sophomores and Juniors who have a cumulative GPA of 3.60 by the end of the first semester will receive a letter inviting them to complete an NHS membership form.  On the membership form, candidates for NHS will submit verification of 20+ hours of service (sophomores), 32+ hours of service (juniors) and participation in three activities that meet regularly (two of which must be SLUH-related).  The service must be the ministry of presence and have been performed at any of the NHS-approved agencies between June 1, 2012 and February 21, 2013.  Click here to see the list of NHS-approved agencies.  These forms will be due to the NHS moderator by the end of the school day on Friday, February 22, 2013.
  • SLUH faculty members will evaluate the service, leadership, and character of those candidates who submit the membership forms.  The Assistant Principal for Academics will evaluate each candidate for violations of academic integrity.  The Assistant Principal for Student Life will evaluate each candidate for discipline history.
  • The SLUH Faculty Council will evaluate the candidate membership forms and faculty/administrator evaluation forms to determine if each candidate fulfills the requirements for membership.
  • Letters informing candidates of this decision will be sent in March.
  • Induction of new members will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 in the evening.

Beginning the 2011-2012 school year, only service performed for select agencies will be accepted for NHS service.  This service must de done directly with the people you are serving ("ministry of presence")  This applies for current members as well as for those students who may be seeking membership for that school year.  For more information, go the the NHS service information page.

Current members will submit service hours quarterly to Mrs. Chott.
