Frequently Asked Questions about NHS Service:
- I would like to be a member of NHS. How will I know I am eligible and when can I submit a membership form?
Membership forms are sent at the beginning of the 3rd quarter to those sophomores and juniors who have a cumulative GPA of 3.60. The forms for 2012 will be due to the NHS Moderator by the end of the school day on Friday, February 24, 2012.
- When are members inducted into NHS?
The induction ceremony for 2012 will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, in the evening.
- How many service hours must I have to be considered for NHS membership?
Sophomores must have served 20+ hours between June 1, 2011 and February 23, 2012. Juniors must have served 32+ hours between June 1, 2011 and February 23, 2012.
- What kind of service is acceptable for NHS membership?
The type of service acceptable for NHS membership has changed for the 2011-2012 school year. Beginning June 2011, the only service acceptable for NHS members, and for those seeking membership that school year, will be service that is performed in the presence of those in need of our help, at agencies that are on the list of NHS-Approved Service Work. These agencies are agencies that serve those who are are truly in need of our help, and have been approved by the NHS Faculty Council. The list of these agencies appears at the top of this page. Service work at all of the agencies/activities must be done directly with those in need of our help, or the "ministry of presence".
- Where can I find the list of Acceptable Agencies for NHS service?
The list of the approved agencies for NHS membership appears at the top of this page.
- I would like to suggest additional agencies to be included on the list of Acceptable Agencies for NHS service. What is the procedure to do that?
All current members are encouraged to suggest additional agencies/activities to be considered for inclusion in this list. The NHS Faculty Council considers these suggestions four times a year. NHS members will complete the "Form To Propose Agencies for NHS-Approved Service Hours". The deadlines to turn in these forms is the same as the deadlines for members to turn in quarterly NHS service forms.
- In the 4th quarter, I was inducted as a member of NHS. Now what?
Beginning this coming June 1, your service hours will count for hours served for the 2011-2012 school year. Service hour forms must be submitted by each member to the NHS moderator quarterly until that member has submitted 32+ verified service hours. The submission dates for the forms are Friday, October 14; Friday, December 16; Friday, March 16; and the final verified hours are due by Monday, April 23, 2012. Members must attend NHS quarterly meetings, lead the all-school summer reading book discussion groups, and work at Open House and Cashbah. All members will be asked to assist with tutoring of fellow SLUH students. Other activities will be planned by the NHS officers.
- Does Senior Service Project count towards my 32+ hours needed for NHS during Senior year?
No. The hours that count for NHS service will not include those hours completed for Senior Service Project. However, if seniors work at their senior service sites outside of their required hours, they may submit those hours for NHS service, as long as they document each day and exact times spent at their senior service sites. A site supervisor will sign each documented date.
- Is there a deadline to complete the required service hours?
Yes. Every member is required to submit a service hour form each quarter, until he completes a minimum of 32 hours per year. On the service hour form, each member will either list verified service hours performed, or indicate the intent of serving specific service hours in the future (example, Mission Appalacia, during Spring Break.) All service hours must be complete and verified by the final due date. The service hour submission form is located at the top of this page. The submission dates for the forms for the 2011-2012 school year are Friday, October 14; Friday, December 16; Friday, March 16; and the final verified hours are due by Monday, April 23, 2012.
- I forgot to turn in my service hour form by the due date. Are there consequences?
Members who do not turn in their service hour forms by a due date will be placed on probation for the two subsequent complete quarters. If, by the end of that time, that member's actions do not warrant further consequences, his membership will return to regular status. However, if, during that time, that member fails to live up to the duties of an NHS member a second time (such as failure to submit the required service forms, pay his dues, or attend mandatory activities, etc...) his NHS membership will be revoked.
Seniors who are on probation anytime during the 4th quarter will not be recognized as "NHS members in good standing" at the Senior Awards Ceremony.
- I was not able to complete the required number of service hours by the final due date. Are there consequences?
Members who do not complete the required number of service hours by the final due date, Monday, April 23, 2012, will be placed on probation for the two subsequent complete quarters (1st and 2nd quarters of the following school year). If, by the end of that time, that member's actions do not warrant further consequences, his membership will return to regular status. However, if, during that time, that member fails to live up to the duties of an NHS member (such as failure to submit the required service forms, pay his dues, or attend mandatory activities, etc...) his NHS membership will be revoked.
Seniors who are on probation anytime during the 4th quarter will not be recognized as "NHS members in good standing" at the Senior Awards Ceremony.
