Raterman Honored with Scholarship

Jim Raterman, esteemed member of the English department known for his passion and zeal in the classroom, has been honored with a fully endowed scholarship bearing his name.

The family of Tom Santel ’76 has created a scholarship to assist the affordable education for students at SLUH.  They chose to name it in honor of Raterman to express their gratitude for his work at SLUH since 1973.

In addition to a scholarship at SLUH now bearing his name, Raterman has been honored in the past with:

  • Jesuit Partner Award (2004): This award is presented annually by the Board of Trustees to recognize and reward a member of the SLUH faculty for his/her outstanding support of Catholic, Jesuit education. The teacher selected each year has shown great dedication, both in and out of the classroom, to the ideals of Jesuit education.
  • Sr. Achlin Casy Award for Excellence in Teaching (2006): Raterman was recognized by Saint Louis University’s 1818 Program for his excellence in teaching.
  • The Raterman Award: A few years ago, this award was established at SLUH to honor Raterman.  It is given annually by the faculty of the English Department to an exemplary senior who reads attentively, speaks from the heart, writes with conviction and devotes himself to learning.
Pictured are two generations of the Prep NewsFrom left: Steve Missey ’88, Jim Santel ’08, Tom Santel ’76 and Jim Raterman.  Tom Santel ’76 was the Editor in Chief of the Prep News during his senior year at SLUH, and English teacher Jim Raterman was the moderator.  Together, they took on the task of making the Prep News a weekly publication.  To this day, it is the only weekly high school publication in St. Louis.  Tom’s son Jim Santel ’08 followed in his father’s footsteps and was named Editor in Chief of the Prep News as a senior.  English teacher Steve Missey ’88 is the current moderator of the Prep News.
