2020 – Virtual Golf Classic
bryson's brawn delivers new acura for steinway '02
After four days of great competition, Bryson DeChambeau's victory at Winged Foot brought the first-ever Scholarship Virtual Golf Classic title to Patrick Steinway, Class of 2002. The tournament will be remembered in New York for the thick rough, undulating greens, and the rare September finish to the national championship. The virtual event will be recalled for the creativity from the Planning Committee to plan such a unique event, strong competition each day for the highest round of the day prize, and a picture-perfect on-campus Live Draft to celebrate. Thanks to those who participated this year and helped raise more than $165,000 for the scholarship program at SLUH.

Tom Berra '85 fired a shot to 20' on the 9th green at the Bogey Club, and watched as his other seven competitors in the Shootout tried to best his shot. When they could not, Berra had something to celebrate: the keys to a new 2019 Lexus ES 350.
Meanwhile, the team of Ed Costigan '60, Ed Dickinson, Stephen Lestmann '05, John Roth '98, and Joe Stieven '78 took home the team championship, a familiar scene for them all. Costigan has been on the winning team six out of the event's eight years, while his partners each added their fifth victory at the Scholarship Golf Classic.
The evening program included a reflection by SLUH senior Irfaun Karim, who expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to be a Jr. Bill. Together, the participants and sponsors (listed below) joined together in raising over $200,000 for the financial aid program of St. Louis U. High.

Schumert '02 drives home a winner at the 6th Annual SLUH Scholarship Golf Classic
Presented by the David and Barbara Mungenast Foundation and Mungenast Automotive Family
Swirling winds and the pressure of the moment were no match for Andy Schumert '02. Hitting from 152 yards away as the sun began to set, Schumert knocked his shot onto the green then watched anxiously as the remaining 6 shooters tried to best him in the first-ever Shootout playoff. But none were able to and Schumert won the 6th Annual SLUH Scholarship Golf Classic Shootout and a new 2-year lease to a 2017 Lexus RC 300 F-Sport.
The team of Ed Dickinson, Tim O'Neill '72, John Roth '98, Duffy Dunn '98, and John Lee '58 captured the new "traveling" Scholarship Golf Classic Trophy with a team score of 112.
Prior to the Shootout proceedings, Antwine '19 spoke about his love of St. Louis University High and inspired the audience to support SLUH to the tune of nearly $90,000 in auction and Fund-A-Need donations. Also taking place during the program was a fitting tribute by Joe Jedlicka to David Laughlin on the occasion of his final Golf Classic before he leaves SLUH at the end of this school year.
Overall, the event raised in excess of $200,000 for the Scholarship Program at SLUH, where 40% of students receive $4.1 million in direct financial aid.
Thanks to all participants and the many sponsors of our Scholarship Golf Classic!

We did it!
Thanks to the generosity of the SLUH community and those at the event, we surpassed $1 million in funds raised for the scholarship program at SLUH.
Congratulations to Phil Caster on winning the 2016 Lexus RC 300 F-Sport with a shot that landed a mere 7 1/2 inches away from the cup!
Congratulations to the team of Ed Costigan, Jr., Joe Stieven, Ed Dickinson, Stephen Lestmann, and Phil Caster on repeating as the Scholarship Golf Classic Championship team.
What does $1,000,000 mean? With the average aid grant around $8,000 over the 5 years of the event, we will have helped 125 students—about half a class—receive a SLUH education.

5th Annual Golf Classic Raises over $210,000 for Scholarship Program
St. Louis University High hosted another successful Scholarship Golf Classic on Monday, September 28. The fourth annual event, presented by the David and Barbara Mungenast Foundation and Mungenast Automotive Family, was hosted at The Bogey Club.
Thanks to the generous support of alumni, parents, and friends as players and sponsors, the event raised over $200,000 for the scholarship program at SLUH. On a day filled with highlights, some extra-special moments stand out:
- During the evening program, emceed by NBC Sports personality Steve Schlanger ’89, current junior Sam Chechik shared with the audience exactly what SLUH means to him and how the generosity of others helps the school achieve greatness. Shortly after Chechik’s inspiring words, more than $75,000 was raised during the auction and Fund-A-Need.
- As the program concluded, eight contestants participated in the Shootout to win a new car. From 135 yards away on the #9 fairway on a beautiful evening, Tom O’Toole ’75 knocked one in tight to just over 5 feet to secure the win and a new 2015 Lexus IS 350 C, courtesy of Mungenast Lexus of St. Louis.
The Scholarship Golf Classic has now raised nearly $800,000 for tuition assistance at SLUH since its inception in 2012.
Thanks to the following who served on the Tournament Planning Committee for helping to make this event a tremendous success: Tom Berra ’85, Steve Broun ’79, Larry Christopher ’80, Dan Devereux ’69, Tom Fagan ’85, Tim Fogerty, Jim Hill ’84, Jay Howe, Joe Jedlicka ’80, John Lamping ’81, Dan Millman ’87, Tom O’Toole, Jr. ’75, Gary Pohrer ’62, Dan Renz ’76, Steve Sieckhaus ’83, Kevin Sullivan ’83, Tim Wells ’99, Mark Wilhelm ’72

2014 @ Old Warson
The setting sun provided a picture-perfect backdrop at the 9th hole at Old Warson Country Club as Nick Kriegel ’95 took a deep breath, drew his club back, and hit the golf shot of his life. The ball arced in the colorful twilight and settled about 6 feet away from the cup as the crowd of on-lookers roared. Kriegel’s shot bested the efforts of 7 other finalists, and suddenly he found himself with a nice new possession: a brand new 2014 Lexus IS 250C, courtesy of Mungenast Lexus of St. Louis.
Kriegel’s precision was a fitting end to a wonderful day at the 3rdAnnual SLUH Scholarship Golf Classic. This year’s tournament, once again presented by the Mungenast Automotive Family, proved to be a fun day on the links and a successful day for the scholarship program at SLUH.
The course included eight Par 3’s, and each of those holes had a brand new Lexus as a prize to anyone up to the task of hitting a hole-in-one. Those eight holes also served as a means of qualification into the Shootout to win the IS 250C. Though no one was able to score an “ace,” each of the qualifiers knocked their respective shots inside 10 feet. The other seven contestants joining Kriegel were Don Beckerle ’84, Pat Crawley ’85, Joe Jedlicka ’80, Tom Moore, Tim O’Neill ’72, Nick Wilhelm ’07 and Bill Witzofsky ’80. There was also a team competition, with David Fitzpatrick, Kevin McLaughlin ’88, Robert Pohrer ’94 and John Roth ’98 claiming the Tiffany etched-glass trophies.
Prior to the Shootout, SLUH President David Laughlin introduced the group to William Edwards ’12, who spoke about his experience as a scholarship recipient at SLUH. Edwards, currently working full-time at Bissinger’s Handcrafted Chocolatier while also studying as a full-time student, told the crowd “SLUH wasn’t just the best four years of my life. It was the best four-year beginning to anew life.” When discussing his gratitude for people he had never met being willing to donate so he could attend SLUH, Edwards said that generosity taught him that “family doesn’t stop with the people we share blood with.”
Over $200,000 was raised at this year's event, pushing the three-year total for the Golf Classic to nearly $600,000. All proceeds from the Golf Classic benefit the scholarship program at SLUH, where young men are served based on their ability to succeed rather than their economic circumstances.

2nd Annual Golf Classic Raises Bar, Eclipses $200K
The Second Annual SLUH Scholarship Golf Classic, recently held at the Country Club of St. Albans, raised significant funds that will benefit financial aid at SLUH. More than 90 golfers in 18 fivesomes came out on a beautiful fall day to test their skills in the event presented by The Mungenast Automotive Family.
The Golf Classic featured eight opportunities for each golfer to win a new vehicle by shooting a hole-in-one. While nobody hit a hole-in-one, there were some very close shots. The golfers who landed closest to the eight holes earned a chance to win a two-year lease on a 2014 Lexus RX350 by competing in a shootout. An elated DJ Herbec received the lease after winning this competition.
The Golf Classic, held on Monday, September 30, brought in more than $200,000 (including pledges). This was a 23 percent increase from the year before, and helps SLUH on its way towards the $3.7-million goal for the scholarship program.
Joel Ocampo ‘13 addressed the group in a moving speech before the auction. As a former scholarship recipient, he said, “You gave me more than money. You gave me a community.”
SLUH thanks the Planning Committee for their efforts in organizing the event, the many volunteers who helped ensure the day ran smoothly, and of course, the many sponsors who helped make the event so successful.

Inaugural Golf Classic a Success
The inaugural SLUH Scholarship Golf Classic, Presented by Mungenast Automotive Family, was held October 15, 2012 at the scenic Country Club of St. Albans. It was an exciting, first-of-its-kind event for the School and exceeded expectations by netting $105,000 for the SLUH Scholarship Fund. In addition, a lucky winner drove away in a new 2013 Lexus RX 350.
“This was a new and exciting event for SLUH and golfers of all skill levels,” says Jay Delsing, a PGA Professional and 1979 graduate of SLUH who was on the event planning committee. “Every participant had eight chances to win a brand-new car while supporting the academic excellence at the city’s premier high school.”
The course was set up to include eight Par-3 holes. Each golfer had a chance to win a brand-new car on every Par-3 with a hole-in-one. The eight golfers who were closest to the hole on each Par-3 hole qualified for a Shootout before the gallery to win a 2-year lease on a 2013 Lexus RX 350, courtesy of Mungenast Lexus of St. Louis. Dan Devereux ’69 (pictured above) won the Shootout and the lease on the new Lexus.
All event proceeds will benefit SLUH’s scholarship fund, which allows the School to continue its legacy of admitting any qualified young man regardless of his ability to pay tuition. St. Louis U. High prepares boys from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. More than 35% of families receive financial assistance; the average financial aid award is $7,100.
This accessibility makes the U. High unique, not only in St. Louis, but in private education on a broad scale. Importantly, the scholarship program enables the School’s student body to reflect the geographic, socio-economic and ethnic diversity of the area. Jr. Billikens reside in 89 different zip codes on both sides of the Mississippi River.
Next year's SLUH Scholarship Golf Classic will be held Monday, September 30, 2013 at The Country Club of St. Albans. It will coincide with next year’s Reunion Weekend on September 26-29.
