Students honored at awards assembly
St. Louis U. High held its annual awards assembly last Friday. Recognizing the achievements of individual students and the school’s numerous clubs, the ceremony centers around eight prestigious honors awarded only to seniors: the Ed Hawk, Hinck-Hereford, Mac Boland, Dunn-Martel, Raterman, Principal’s Leadership, Archbishop May Service, and Jesuit Secondary Education Association (JSEA) awards. For only the fourth time in these awards’ history, one senior received two of these honors.
The Ed Hawk and the Hinck-Hereford awards were both given to Scott Rice. The Ed Hawk award, according to the plaque hanging in the school’s central corridor, is presented to the senior who “through his example of working and giving was most able to influence his class toward success by cooperation and unity. The oldest of SLUH’s awards, first presented in 1946, the Hinck-Hereford award is given to the senior who has distinguished himself in the areas of leadership, scholarship, and athletics.
“I was definitely surprised, Rice said. “It was really exciting. By receiving two awards, Rice follows in the footsteps of Mark Clark, ’72, and Kevin Folkl, ’92, who were each awarded both the Ed Hawk and the Hinck-Hereford honors, and Ricardo Vigil,’00, who won the Mac Boland and the Hinck-Hereford.
Matt Ampleman won this year’s Mac Boland award. According to the plaque located in the school’s central corridor, the Mac Boland award is given annually to “the otherwise unheralded senior who…has most influenced his fellow students toward more united participation in the spirit which is St. Louis U. High.
“Everyone in (the senior) class deserves something, and to single out ten people doesn’t do justice to the class, Ampleman said, but added that receiving the award was “an immense honor. Ampleman was especially honored because the recipient is chosen by the faculty. “Coming from the faculty, it means a lot, Ampleman said. “These are all people whom I really respect. Ampleman will be one of two speakers at the graduation dinner.
The Dunn-Martel award was first given in 1988 to honor the coaching achievements of soccer coach Edward A. Dunn and football coach Paul J. Martel. According to the plaque across the main office, “The school will present this award annually to the senior who maintains the high level of scholarship as well as the discipline and commitment of athletic participation.
Ben Murphy-Baum received this year’s Dunn-Martel award. Murphy-Baum said, “I felt great. It’s nice to (be given) recognition for four years of athletics. It’s just great to kind of look back on everything and look at the stuff you’ve gotten to participate in.
Murphy-Baum finished second overall in the state cross-country meet, and led his team to a fourth-place finish. This track season Murphy-Baum hopes to help lead the track team to a state championship.
The newest of the awards is the Raterman award. The award is in honor of English teacher Jim Raterman and is given “to an exemplary SLUH senior who reads attentively, speaks from the heart, writes with conviction, and devotes himself to learning, according to the award’s plaque, which hangs next to the English department office. Kyle Kloster is the second recipient of the Raterman award.
“Last year, when they gave (the award)to Paul Barker, I thought, ‘Wow, what a cool award,’ Kloster said. Kloster added that after receiving the award, he “felt guilty, because I knew of other people in my class who … were just as deserving of the award.
The Principal’s Leadership award was presented to Timo Kim. The award is given to a senior who “demonstrated an ability to combine academic excellence and exemplary leadership roles in school and community activities, according to Kim’s certificate. Kim applied for the award earlier in the year on the recommendation of principal Mary Schenkenberg.
Tim Malecek was announced as the winner of the Archbishop May Service Award in February (see issue 22).
Dan Finucane won the JSEA award this year. The JSEA is an honor given to one student in each of the 49 Jesuit high schools in the country. The award is given to a well-rounded student, who is intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to doing justice. As the winner of the JSEA award, Finucane will be the other speaker at the graduation dinner.
Finucane said of the award, “It was weird because I wasn’t expecting to win anything, and I told my mom that morning ‘Don’t even come,’ and she ended up coming. I was really surprised.
