Academic Success Marks 2005-06

One of the most remarkable notes of the 2005-06 school year at St. Louis University High School included the academic success achieved by students. This success can be attributed in part to the commitment of SLUH faculty and the school’s strong curriculum, which challenges students to think critically and achieve their potential. Some of the academic highlights from this past school year include:

  • Four students from the class of 2006 – Matt Ampleman, Timo Kim, Andrew Schroeder and Joel Westwood – earned perfect ACT scores in one year. That is more than 36 entire states! Each year, fewer than 300 students nationwide achieve this score. If that were not enough, Micah Manary ’07 and Todd Swift ‘07 joined the quartet by earning perfect ACT scores as well.
  • Micah Manary also achieved a perfect score of 240 on the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) exam, which sophomores and juniors are required to take.
  • To complement his perfect ACT score, Timo Kim achieved a rare “perfect triple? on the new SAT Subject Tests (often called the SAT-2 tests), earning the top score of 800 out of 800 on all three of the tests and resulting in a perfect score of 2,400.
  • The College Board’s Midwestern Regional Office ranked SLUH’s Advanced Placement (AP) program with the highest ranking of any school in the State of Missouri with at least 250 students in its senior class.
  • The Varsity and Sophomore teams in the Latin “Certamen�? competition won the state titles in the annual Latin competition in Columbia, MO in May.
  • SLUH’s Academic Team won the Quiz Bowl Class 4 District title and moved on to state competition this spring. At the state competition, Timo Kim finished in third place in the individual contest.
  • SLUH’s “math-letes"? took the state title this year in the annual Missouri Math League competition. SLUH also finished first in the region, which consists of 6 midwestern states.
  • SLUH’s Physics Team won the midwestern region (consisting of 7 midwestern states) and placed 7th overall in the nation in the Physics Bowl, which is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Physics Teachers.
  • Three students in the AP Economics courses at SLUH won prizes from the Federal Reserve in the Fed’s annual essay contest. Sean O’Neil ‘09, Anthony Keel ‘06 and Nick Niehaus ‘06 won first, second and third place respectively in the St. Louis competition.
  • Tim Heuther ‘06 received a silver medal in the prestigious second round of competition in the National Russian Essay Contest. In addition, Nathan Roth ‘07, Michael Rauschenbach ‘08, Michael Finucane ‘08 and Justin Roth ‘09 earned Gold Medals at the Olympiada of Spoken Russian held in Memphis, TN this spring.
