SLUH Scholars Receive National Recognition

Six SLUH seniors were identified by the U.S. Department of Education as candidates for Presidential Scholar Awards, the most identified from any one school in the state.

Seniors Gerard Lakin, Micah Manary, Christian Ronzio, Timothy Ryan, Thomas Tandler, and Daniel Viox were among 53 high school seniors from Missouri who qualified as candidates for the Presidential Scholars Program based on their exceptional scores on either the College Board SAT or the ACT Assessment. Approximately 2,600 seniors nationwide qualified as candidates. No other school in Missouri had more than four candidates recognized.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by executive order of the President to honor students who “represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in young people." The program, run by the U.S. Department of Education, annually recognizes 121 academic scholars and 20 arts scholars from around the nation.

Candidates are invited to submit further materials reflecting their academic and personal qualifications including academic records, a resume, and an essay to a review committee established by the U.S. Department of Education. After two thorough reviews of each candidate’s academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities and an analysis of their essay, The Commission on Presidential Scholars will choose 141 Presidential Scholars. These scholars receive an expense paid trip to Washington D.C. where they will receive the Presidential Scholars Medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House.
