SLUH Dedicates Sheridan Stadium
St. Louis University High School has formally commemorated its new baseball stadium in honor of the school's former president, Fr. Paul G. Sheridan, S.J. The dedication coincided with the Jesuit Baseball Classic hosted by SLUH. Sheridan Stadium was completed in 2006.
"SLUH is grateful for the many gifts my predecessor Fr. Sheridan bestowed on our community," says SLUH President David J. Laughlin. "His leadership and vision have helped preserve our tradition of excellence, so it is fitting that we recognize him appropriately."
Fr. Sheridan served as SLUH President from 1996-2005. Since his departure, he has been President of Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, Ca., which, like SLUH, is a Jesuit high school and part of the Jesuit Secondary Education Association (JSEA). Prior to serving at SLUH, Fr. Sheridan was President of Boys Hope/Girls Hope (BHGH), an organization that provides at-risk children with a stable home, positive parenting, high quality education, and the support needed to reach their full potential. He founded BHGH in 1977.
During his tenure at SLUH, Fr. Sheridan taught theology and coached the C-baseball team, in addition to his responsibilities as president. Perhaps his greatest achievement as president was to conceptualize VISION 2000, a community-wide endeavor that provided the strategy to secure the future of SLUH, beginning in 1997. This comprehensive campaign, which surpassed its $32-million goal, has made enhancements in the following areas: academics, technology and student life services; scholarship and debt retirement programs; community and campus development; and competitive, on-campus athletic facilities.
"St. Louis University High School is a community filled with great vitality and spiritual dynamism," says Father Sheridan. "Through the tremendous support of the SLUH community, the school has confirmed its commitment to bettering the City of St. Louis and to preserving its rich tradition of excellence with VISION 2000."
Fr. Sheridan was present for the dedication ceremony, which occurred between baseball games of the Jesuit Baseball Classic.
