First-Ranked Soccerbills Win Season Opener
The St. Louis University High School varsity soccer team, ranked #1 in the metropolitan area by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, defeated O'Fallon, Ill. 4-0 last night in the season opener. Erik Carretero, Jack Twellman, Nick Maglasang and Kevin Steitz scored goals for the Jr. Bills, and goalie Luis Soffner recorded the shutout.
The Bills squandered three early opportunities but eventually honed the offense with two goals scored in each half.
"We were a little disorganized at times, but we had moments of brilliance which led to the four goals," says Coach Charlie Martel. "What was really impressive about the game is the incredible work rate that the Jr. Bills exhibited for the full 80 minutes. This bodes well for the remainder of the season."
SLUH has six returners from a squad that won 25 games last season. Returning seniors are Kevin Smith, Chris Haffner, David Ziegler, Quinn Ottwell, Jack Twellman and Erik Carreterro.
The team's next match is at Gibault on Friday, August 31st at 7:00 p.m.
