Football Team Tops No. 2 DeSmet

The St. Louis University High School varsity football team earned an impressive win by defeating DeSmet 13-12 on Friday, October 5th. Remarkable performances from SLUH's defense, as well as Ronnie Wingo, Eric Devlin and John Swanston catapulted the Jr. Bills to victory. DeSmet entered the game as the No. 2-ranked team in the area.

"Defensively we played our best game," says Coach Gary Kornfeld. "The kids made plays all over the field."

SLUH limited DeSmet to only two conversions out of 11 third-down situations.

The Jr. Bills drove the ball 81 yards in a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback, with junior running back Ronnie Wingo carrying the load. The drive culminated with a five-yard touchdown pass by junior quarterback John Swanston to senior wide receiver Eric Devlin with only 19 seconds remaining in the game.

Wingo rushed for 115 yards on 27 attempts, and Swanston completed 7 of 14 passes for 113 yards. On the defensive side, senior Andrew Bouquet finished with seven tackles, three assists and three sacks, and sophomore Collum Magee had six tackles and four assists.

Next, SLUH (3-3) faces CBC (3-3) at home on Friday, October 12.
