Leaders Recognized at Assembly

St. Louis University High School hosted its annual awards ceremony today, honoring students for their participation and achievement in various co-curricular activities. The ceremony also honored students and staff with a series of awards recognizing them for their high achievement, commitment and service to SLUH.

Latin teacher Mark Tychonievich was recognized with the Faculty Appreciation Award yesterday at a special mass offered for him. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, and is undergoing surgery today. Though he was not present to receive the award today, he received a standing ovation.

The Faculty Appreciation Award is voted on by the senior class and is presented in gratitude to the teachers at SLUH for all of their efforts toward the growth of their students, for excellence in the classroom as well as contributions outside the classroom.

Some of the most notable student awardees at the assembly include:

PRINCIPAL'S LEADERSHIP AWARD – JIM SANTEL '08

This award is given annually to a senior who, in the opinion of the faculty and the Principal has demonstrated the ability to combine academic excellence and exemplary leadership roles in school and community activities.

ARCHBISHOP MAY SERVICE AWARD – BRETT DELARIA '08

The Archbishop May Service Award is given to a senior in each of the Catholic High Schools in the Archdiocese who, in the opinion of the Pastoral Department and the Administration is an outstanding example of rendering Christian Service within his community and school.

DUNN-MARTEL AWARD – DAN JAMES ‘08

The Dunn-Martel Award was established 19 years ago to honor Coaches Ebbie Dunn and Paul Martel's long and successful tenures as soccer and football coaches at St. Louis University High School. The school presents this award annually to the senior who maintains the high level of scholarship as well as the discipline and commitment of athletic participation that earn for him selection as "Scholar-Athlete" of SLUH.

HINCK-HEREFORD AWARD – MATT RICE ‘08

The Hinck-Hereford Award is named for the two alumni who gave their lives in the service of their country during World War II. This annual award is conferred on the senior who has excelled in leadership, scholarship and athletics and who, in the opinion of the senior class is judged most deserving of this award.

JSEA AWARD – ERIC LAMPE ‘08

The Jesuit Secondary Education Association Award is given for the twentieth year to a student/or students in each of the 47 Jesuit High Schools in the United States. The JSEA is presented to the member/or members of the graduating class who best resembles this ideal: "a well-rounded person who is intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to doing justice in generous service to the people of God."

MAC BOLAND AWARD – WILL HARTZLER ‘08

The Mac Boland award was established by members of the class of 1958 to honor and celebrate the life of their outstanding classmate, William McCreary Boland. The recipient of this annual award, chosen by the faculty, is to be the senior who best reflects Mac Boland's personal qualities which his classmates summarized as follows: "The otherwise unheralded senior, who through his dedication and determination has most influenced his fellow students toward more united participation in the spirit which is St. Louis University High School."

ED HAWK MEMORIAL AWARD - BRETT DELARIA ‘08

The Ed Hawk award was established by members of the class of 1971 in memory of their classmate, whose life was taken after his junior year at SLUH. The fact that he had been elected as an officer of the student council for his senior year is an indication of his standing among his classmates. Through their efforts, an annual award was established to recognize the senior who: "through his love and dedication to St. Louis University High School, and through his example of working and giving, was most able to influence his class toward success by cooperation and unity."
