SLUH Remembers Dominic Calacci

From 1957 to 1992, Mr. Dominic Calacci served the St. Louis University High School community as an esteemed teacher and coach. It is with great sadness the school learned of his passing from leukemia on October 10, 2006. Mr. Calacci will be remembered by alumni, faculty and friends for his impressive record of dedicated service and support.

Known affectionately by students as "Coach" and by colleagues as "Dom," Mr. Calacci was hired by SLUH Principal Fr. Gerald Sheahan, S.J. in 1957, when he commenced teaching history and physical education. He primarily instructed freshmen and sophomores as a world history teacher. Outside the classroom, Mr. Calacci offered his wisdom as a basketball and C-team football coach. He served as track coach his entire tenure.

After retiring in 1992, Mr. Calacci remained part of the SLUH family by regularly attending school functions and assisting with score- and statistic-keeping at athletic events. Dom was always accompanied at these events by his wife Rose.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, October 16, at 11:00 a.m. at the College Church at SLU.

There will be no visitation. Mr. Calacci donated his body to the SLU Medical School.

The family has requested that those who wish to make memorial contributions direct their gifts to the Dominic Calacci Scholarship Fund at St. Louis U. High.

The next issue of SLUH News will feature a story celebrating the life of Coach Calacci. To complement this story, those in the SLUH community are invited to submit their fond memories of Dom to alumni@sluh.org.
