Rifle Team Places Second in Nationals

The St. Louis University High School varsity rifle squad placed second at the 2008 National Junior Olympic 3-Position Precision Air Rifle Championship held July 10-12 in Anniston, Alabama. The team – consisting of Sam Gall ‘08, Jason Nienhaus ‘09, Dan Hermsmeier ‘10, and Houston Barber ‘10 – put on a solid performance and narrowly missed first place by 11 points.

"What I'm really most proud of is how the team battled back," says Coach Will Bresnahan. "After a disappointing performance on day one of the match we found ourselves in a distant fifth place. But our team did not give up and on day two of the match we posted the highest score in the field to climb into second overall."

On the individual level, Hermsmeier finished in 19th place out of 162 shooters. His two-day average was 583-1/2 (out of a possible 600). Both of his scores were personal bests for him. This performance put him in the top ten percent of shooters in the nation, and his combined two-day score of 1,167 led the SLUH team.

Nienhaus earned his "distinguished shooter" medal (a national award) for his performance. He earned eight points by his performance at the match toward the 30 points needed to earn the medal. Points are only earned by finishing in the very top levels of major competitions, exemplifying consistent excellence in the sport.

The competitiveness of this year’s tournament was reflected in the proximity of the final team scores (4,621, 4,610, 4,608, 4,607 and 4,594 - all out of 4,800 points). SLUH scored 4,610. Click HERE to view the final national team totals.

According to Bresnahan, "This was a very high scoring year. 4,610 was our score in 2004 when we won the championship and is a score that would have won two of the last three years."

Earlier in the year SLUH finished first in the State of Missouri at the tournament in Owensville to qualify for the national tournament.

Throughout its storied history in riflery, SLUH has earned six national titles (1959, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964 and 2004).
