Junior Wins at U.S. Chess Open

Peter Harris '10 had all the right moves at the U.S. Open Chess Tournament August 2-10 in Dallas, Texas. As one of only 12 students out of about 400 total players (predominantly adults), Harris competed in nine games to finish first in his class.

Each of Peter’s opponents had a higher U.S. Chess Federation rating than he had, and some significantly higher. “I had a number of really good upsets,” he says. “The last game I played I would say was my best game. Paired up against an opponent almost 400 rating points above me, I knew I would have a hard game.

“I calculated a difficult series of tactical combinations, eventually leading to an easy win in the end.”

“We were very pleased with Peter’s effort and accomplishment,” says Peggy Harris, mother of Peter. Both she and her husband, Larry, were at the tournament. “Peter faced formidable opponents, and every game was extremely challenging.”

According to Peggy, Peter’s grandfather inspired him to begin playing chess at age two.

Each game at the U.S. Open Chess Tournament lasted about six hours. As a reward for finishing first in his class, Peter won $1,500.

“I plan to save most of the prize for college,” says Peter, “but take out a bit of it for spending money.”

In addition to winning a cash reward, Peter’s rating as a chess player jumped by 174 points, so he is now rated as a Class C (upgraded from a Class D).

“The upsets that I had accumulated throughout the tournament boosted my rating quite a bit,” Peter says. “A chess rating reflects what playing level the player is at. Usually at a tournament, a player’s rating does not fluctuate much, or maybe just 20 to 30 points.

“Overall, I’d say I was extremely happy with this tournament.”
