Two Students Awarded for Research Excellence
Seniors Jack Lally and Nevin Peeples have distinguished themselves as aspiring scientists through the Students and Teachers as Research Scientists (STARS) Program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. After spending six weeks this summer conducting intensive research with local professionals and professors, they are two of just 26 St. Louis-area students to receive the 2008 Solutia Inc., Pfizer Inc. and LMI/D3 Technologies Awards for Excellence in Research.
The STARS program introduces high school juniors and seniors to the various aspects of the scientific enterprise as practiced by successful scientists in academic, private or corporate research institutions. UM-St. Louis, in cooperation with the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Saint Louis University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Washington University in St. Louis, sponsors the summer research program for rising junior and senior level high school students. This year, more than 80 students participated in the program.
Details for the SLUH students’ award-winning projects include:
Lally’s research paper was entitled “The Effects of Lesioning the Globus Pallidus on Sleep Architecture,” and his mentor was Dr. Michael Anch of Saint Louis University.
Peeples’ research paper was entitled “Influence of Chloramines on the Dissolution Rates of Lead (II) Corrosion Products,” and his mentor was Dr. Daniel Giammar of Washington University.
Senior corporate scientists from Pfizer Inc. and LMI/D3 Technologies, and selected academic researchers reviewed the papers, which were divided into five categories. Winning papers best exemplified the following qualities: difficulty and complexity of research; appropriateness of the research methodology; findings; quality of writing; and overall quality of the research process.
