Zandstra Honored at Soccer Game

The spirit of Chris Zandstra lives on at St. Louis University High School. The sophomore student who died last year after a lifelong battle with cancer was honored at the varsity soccer match versus St. Dominic at SLUH on Saturday, September 20th. In anticipation of the game, the varsity soccer team held a fundraiser along with St. Dominic for SLUH’s Chris Zandstra Scholarship and for cancer research.

The SLUH coaching staff, along with STUCO and the Campus Ministry Department, organized the event as a way to remember Zandstra and to try and find a cure for cancer. St. Dominic’s varsity soccer coach, Greg Koeller, knows of the impact of the disease, as his wife Marsha was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.

Proceeds from the fundraiser, which included t-shirt sales, benefited both the American Brain Tumor Association and Zandstra’s Scholarship fund at SLUH. More than 300 t-shirts were sold and more than $5,000 raised for the two causes.

According to SLUH Athletic Director Dick Wehner, "There was a near capacity crowd for the soccer game. Afterward, almost everybody walked from the soccer field to the SLUH Chapel in a solidarity walk and filled the chapel to near capacity for a special mass."

Wehner adds, "This could be an annual event with next year's game being held at St. Dominic’s."
