Alumni Put Mission into Action
On Saturday, April 24th, more than 40 alumni volunteered their time and effort by serving at four organizations in the area as part of the Alumni Day of Service. This event, throughout its four-year history, has already benefited seven local organizations with 700 service hours by generous alumni volunteers. The day began with a Mass, celebrated by Fr. Ralph Houlihan ’52, in the SLUH Chapel in the morning. Following Mass, alumni briefly convened and socialized in the Currigan Room before heading out to their service sites. They split into four groups, working at Boys Hope Girls Hope, South Grand Senior Ministry, St. Cecilia’s Parish and St. Matthew’s Parish. Service work ranged from painting and maintenance, to cleaning and landscaping.
"I think it is great that SLUH exposes its students to community service projects, then keeps on giving after graduation by providing opportunities such as the Alumni Day of Service," says Tom Simon '69, who worked at St. Matthew's.
Separate from the Alumni Day of Service, groups of alumni meet throughout the year to serve at various organizations, such as St. Matthew’s Parish, St. Cecilia’s Parish and South Grand Senior Ministry.
