Students March for Life

Twenty Jr. Billikens showed their Pro-Life support at the national March for Life on January 23rd in Washington D.C.  Accompanied by President David Laughlin and Dr. David Callon from SLUH, they joined about 400,000 others in protest of abortion and the legislation that legalizes it in the United States.

"Taking an activist stance on the issue got me thinking about why I believe the things I do, and in doing so further strengthened my Pro-Life beliefs," says senior Luke Reichold, who went on the trip.

"In addition,” he says, “listening to the speakers present on the Pro-Life movement really helped me realize the connections between so many issues of our day, such as war, euthanasia and the death penalty, and how being anti-abortion is only a fraction of what it means to be Pro-Life."

The students, who represented all four classes, arrived in Washington D.C. two days prior to the march.  They did some sightseeing, heard from several speakers from the Pro-Life Movement, and went to Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception at the Catholic University of America.

In addition, they visited St. Aloyisius Gonzaga Church with Fr. Joe Laramie, S.J. '96, who preached at the Jesuit school gathering Mass before the March for Life.

"The experience allowed me to grow in my Pro-Life stance and further realize the crucial importance of supporting all stages of life and protecting the life that is being threatened in our society," says Joel Ocampo '13. "Furthermore, the nightly discussions we had as a group allowed me to learn from my other classmates the different ways in which we as students can exemplify the Pro-Life attitude and make a change in our own community."
