At the Jr. Billiken football game this past Friday night (October 12), the SLUH football program honored Deacon Jim Murphy '54 for his many years of service as the Jr. Bills football announcer. In addition, alumni athletes from the football and soccer teams of the 1972-73 season were recognized for their remarkable accomplishments.
Dcn. "Doc" Murphy, who was the voice of the Jr. Bills during home football games for 43 years, recently retired from his service as announcer.
The 1972-73 SoccerBills won the state title 30 years ago, and the 1972 FootballBills were undefeated and ranked #1 in the area.
The present-day Jr. Bills defeated Mehlville 42-14 in the football game.
Following is the script honoring Doc Murphy at the football game:
Before this evenings kickoff we would like all fans to turn their attention to mid-field for a very special presentation. At mid-field is St. Louis U. High President David Laughlin along with athletic director Dick Wehner and SLUH head football coach Gary Kornfeld. Joining them is Dr. Jim Murphy former longtime teacher/counselor/coach at St. Louis U. High and for the past 43 years the PA announcer for the St. Louis U. High football program.
Jim Murphy is a 1954 graduate of St. Louis U. High and went on to receive his undergraduate and Ph.d from St. Louis University. He began his teaching and coaching career at his alma mater in 1960 and retired some 41 years later in 2001.
During his 41 years at SLUH Jim took on many tasks as he taught everything from mechanical drawing to Geometry to environmental issues to Theology. He took on all tasks as counselor, moderator and director of many projects. Murph spent 21 years in the SLUH football program and 26 years in our wrestling program with 21 as our head coach. In 1970 along with Charlie Busenhart Jim was one of the founding fathers of the SLUH hockey program.
Two of Jim’s greatest loves are his wife Rose of 48 years his two children Mary Grace and Chris and their 8 grandchildren as well as the Catholic Church in which he serves. Jim was ordained a deacon in 1991 and serves the Archdiocese of St. Louis in the parish of St.
Dominic Savio in Affton.
We honor Jim tonight for his service to SLUH and the church but in particular for his 43 years of service to the SLUH Football program as our PA announcer---He started announcing Jr. Billiken football in 1968 when our home games were at the old O’Fallon Tech now Gateway High School and continued when the football team came to its new home on campus in 1980. Jim stepped down as our PA announcer at the end of the 2011 season. Doc Murphy will man the booth one more time at halftime tonight as we honor the the 1972 State Champion Football Team and 1973 State Soccer Champions.
To commemorate his service---the athletic department would like to present him with the #54 SLUH Football jersey (the year in which he graduated) and to go to mid-field for the coin toss as a honorary captain. As a memento of this occasion we would also like to to give Jim a plaque which reads:
