Alumni Reach Out on Day of Service

Fr. Pedro Arrupe, former Superior General of the Society of Jesus, once said, "Our prime educational objective must be to form men-for-others…" More than 70 SLUH alumni demonstrated the importance of being "men for others" on Saturday, June 30th for SLUH's inaugural Alumni Day of Service. Alumni met at seven different service sites in the metropolitan area to assist needy organizations and actively carry out the mission of SLUH.

"The Alumni Day of Service actively engaged the Ignatian ideal of 'men for others' by fostering awareness of distinct areas of need, promoting action for positive change within communities and encouraging reflection to discern God in our world," says SLUH President David Laughlin. "It also provided an opportunity for alumni to reconnect with the SLUH community."

Participating service sites included Our Little Haven, St. Matthew's Parish, St. Cecilia's Parish, Loyola Academy, Intercommunity Housing Association and Southside Senior Services. Due to overwhelming alumni response, another service site – Marian Middle School – was coordinated days before the event to accommodate willing volunteers. Some site activities included landscaping, painting and general maintenance work.

Alumni met at their respective service sites at 8 a.m. and worked until noon. Then, they met in the SLUH chapel for a mass led by Fr. Bill Hutchison '53 and socialized afterward at lunch in the SLUH cafeteria.

Thanks to those alumni who participated in the first-ever SLUH Alumni Day of Service. SLUH will gather feedback from alumni to build on the success of this event in future years.
