SLUH Caps Off Basketball Era with Victory
The Jr. Billikens hosted their final basketball game in the school's Backer Gymnasium on February 17th with an exciting overtime victory against MICDS 69-65. In the fall of 2009, SLUH will open the Danis Fieldhouse, and a new era of SLUH Basketball will begin.Former SLUH coaches and players were recognized by SLUH Athletic Director Dick Wehner during breaks in the game and at halftime. Among those in attendance were former coaches Hank Raymonds '42, Emmet Hanick and Don Maurer, and former players such as Ed Macauley '45 and several from the state championship teams of 1958 and 1961. A special post-game reception was held for the coaches and players as well.
The Backer Gymnasium has been the home of Jr. Billiken Basketball for 54 years. It opened during the 1955-56 season and has been in continual use since that time.
