Six hundred SLUH mothers and sons convened on Friday, March 4th for the first-ever SLUH Mother/Son Trivia Night. They filled the Commons at 73 tables, some of which were decorated in festive themes.
“I would say the highlight was having such a tremendous response the first time out, and walking around seeing everyone having such a great time,” says Pat Griffard, who served as Co-Chair for the event with Mary Eilers.
Some of the trivia categories included:
- Movie Trailer: Part of a movie was shown, and participants had to give the exact name of the movie.
- TV Villains: A picture of Mr. Kesterson was shown as the category was described. A segment of a television show was displayed on the screen, and participants had to name the TV villain shown.
- Real to Reel: Segments of movies made from Broadway shows were featured, and participants had to name the movie.
- 20 Faces: 20 faces were shown in 20 seconds (Mr. Laughlin was #19). Participants had to name as many as they could remember.
- Sports
- Up Close: Objects were shown extremely close-up, and participants had to name them.
- Finish the Lyrics: MTV videos were shown, and participants had to finish the lyrics after the video stopped.
- Sink or Float: Objects were shown to the audience, and they had to guess if they would sink or float.
An expert was auctioned off for the "Finish the Lyrics" category, which proved to be the most difficult category by most accounts. The team that “bought” the expert earned a perfect score on that round.
Several teams decorated their tables. The table that earned the first prize for best-decorated table (two pizzas from Imo’s) featured a Spring Training in Jupiter theme, with palm trees and baseball decorations, and the moms and sons garbed in Cardinals shirts. Another table had a hockey theme, and one table had leprechauns and a SLUH student dressed as a pot of gold.
“We had numerous e-mails from people telling us how much they enjoyed the evening,” says Eilers. “During the event it appeared everyone was having a great time.”
Due to the success of this year’s event, she says there will likely be another Mother/Son Trivia Night on March 3, 2012.
