Junior Class

Junior Overview

Junior year is an exciting year at SLUH. Students are now upperclassmen, taking on true leadership roles like management positions at jobs, leads in the play productions, captains of the team, and as leaders of various clubs. They are now looked up to and counted on by the underclassmen who will strive to attain the bar that will be set by this year’s class. They are taking harder classes and thinking about college. Gone are the stressed-out day of freshman year, close to come are the stressed-out days of college and scholarship applications.

To lead the class of 2013 this year are the following: President Joe Merrill, Pastoral Officer Joe Essig, Social Officer Kevin Brennan, Junior Facutly Moderator Mrs.Mary Russo

Leadership Rite of Passage

Perhaps one of the most unique events to the Junior experience is the rite of passage ceremony in May. This is a mass and reception that celebrates the coming of age of the new leaders of SLUH. It is during this ceremony that the class banner is signed and hung that displays the elected motto; a motto that provides a beacon for leadership, not just for the class but for the entire school. The school takes a half day the first Friday in May, the Juniors are in formal attire, the banner is signed at 1:00pm, and mass starts around 1:30pm. Family and friends and encouraged to attend!

As part of this rite of passage each Junior is called forward and recognized by the faculty and administration, in front of peers, friends, and family. As another symbol, as the banner and motto provide, of this transition to leadership the students will receive their class rings (or a token provided by the school). Although ordered early in the second quarter, the class ring is a symbol not to be worn until leadership position is ready to be taken (1st week of May, Junior Year). Whether worn or kept tucked away, this momento will provide a reminder of SLUH days and the Jesuit ideals by which the students have come to live.
