SLUH President Alan Carruthers presented two deserving graduates with the John J. Divine, SJ Alumni Service Award at the Alumni Board meeting in the Si Commons on May 11. Tim Rodgers ’71 and Michael Soehngen ’67 received this distinguished honor for their dedicated and enduring service to SLUH.

“It is a pleasure to recognize Tim and Michael for all they have contributed to our school over the years,” says Carruthers. “We are deeply appreciative for their passion, loyalty and generosity, as well as their unique gifts and talents. They are models of what it means to be Men for Others.”

Tim Rodgers ‘71
Rodgers is a former President of the Fathers Club, current Chair of the Communications Advisory Board and an active member of the Alumni Board. He has worked diligently to keep his class together during the pandemic, implementing virtual Sunrise Social meet-ups and monthly Manresa (Ingatian spirituality) meetings. He has also helped with the Class of ‘71 Reunion planning committee and assisted with efforts to fully endow their Class Scholarship.

Outside of class-specific activities, Rodgers has provided pro bono work for SLUH marketing, assisted with the SLUH Bicentennial celebration, helped create the first “Women of SLUH” project and provided important recognition for some of the school’s greatest leaders.

Rodgers is the retired founder of Rodgers-Townsend, a nationally acclaimed, full-service marketing communications agency based in St. Louis.

Michael Soehngen ‘67
An active member of the Communications Advisory Board, Soehngen consistently volunteers at events throughout the year. He has helped at countless alumni reunions, including the Legacy Reunion where he welcomes and assists the most respected, senior alumni. Anytime there is an opportunity to volunteer with the SLUH Alumni Board, he is always among the first to sign up.

In addition, he dedicates time every week to proofreading the ParentConnect e-communication to parents, ensures on-brand and consistent messaging, and edits SLUH publications throughout the year.

Soehngen is a retired Vice President-Marketing Communications at CNA Commercial Insurance, based in Chicago.

About the Award
Established in 1974 to honor Fr. John J. Divine, SJ, this award is presented to an outstanding alumnus – or group of alumni – in recognition of their dedicated service to SLUH. Fr. Divine reinvigorated the Alumni Association—now known as the SLUH Alumni Board—in 1941. Before that time, he worked diligently to maintain communication between SLUH and alumni who were serving the country during World War II.

The traditions of loyalty and love for the school were solidified during this turbulent time, under Fr. Divine’s leadership. The Divine Alumni Service Award honors his role as the Alumni Chaplain at SLUH.
