We were once again able to showcase impressive depth at the Clayton Invitational on Friday evening in Shaw Park. After establishing our ten runners for the Big River varsity, we placed seven more in the Clayton varsity division. In the 16-team race, we finished second, trailing only the top varsity from Lutheran St. Charles. We averaged 18:01 and were able to defeat the true second varsity from Festus, another top program in Missouri. Carter Lowe & Francis Alford were our top finishers, both in the top 10 overall, and six of our seven entries earned medals (with our 7th runner, Gabe Sullivan, only one place out of the medals).
Clayton Varsity Medalists: Carter Lowe (6th), Francis Alford (7th), Nolan Meara (13th), Tyler Barks (19th), Lucas Rammacher (20th), Flynn O'Connell (30th)
On the JV level, a senior-only contingent, we are proud to say that we finished 1st of 13 teams represented. Winning his second race of his career, Alex Mittendorf broke away in the third mile from his teammate Tad Gray and Mehlville's top two varsity runners to break the tape in 18:31. Behind Alex in the top ten were Tad (2nd), Gavin Lawhorn (5th), and Peter James (6th). Peter ran a PR, as did our fifth and final scorer: Tag Arens. In addition to running a PR and scoring for a meet winning team, Tag earned his first-ever medal in this race. Way to go, Tag! Jack Werremeyer also medalled and ran a season-best time, and our final medalist was another first time medalist: congratulations to Joseph Nesser, who also complemented his first-ever XC medal with a nice new PR. Also contributing to the team championship were Eli Dernlan and Sam Quinlivan. From top to bottom, this was an excellent race for a special group of seniors who should be very proud of the result.
Clayton JV medalists: Alex Mittendorf (1st), Tad Gray (2nd), Gavin Lawhorn (5th), Peter James (6th), Tag Arens (14th), Jack Werremeyer (19th), Joseph Nesser (33rd)
