Liturgy & Prayer
Liturgy and prayer are at the center of SLUH's Catholic, Jesuit identity. Students participate in, and help lead and coordinate, liturgies in many different ways. See linked information on Masses, daily prayer, and Reconciliation.

Daily Prayer
Prayer is part of the daily rhythm of life for the SLUH community.
MORNING MASS
During the school year, we offer Daily Mass at 7:45 a.m. any day that students are in the building. Students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni are welcome to attend.
Until the chapel renovation project is complete (estimated completion is February 2024), Daily Mass will be celebrated in our temporary chapel in the Theater Loge.
MORNING P.A. PRAYER
Each day begins with a prayer over the P.A. system, usually led by a member of the faculty, staff or administration. Birthdays for the day are also announced at this time and held as a prayer intention.
DAILY EXAMEN
Each school day, SLUH students, faculty and staff dedicate two minutes of reflective silence to the Examen of Consciousness. This simple exercise, inspired by St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, is a daily method of self-examination intended to help practitioners better serve the Lord. The following is a process summary used by those in the SLUH community for the Examen of Consciousness:
Recall that you are in the presence of God. "God, I believe that at this moment I am in your presence and you are loving me."
Resolve to listen to God's voice. "As I look forward to the rest of this day make me aware that you are with me, show me how to become the person you want me to be."
Ask for pardon and give thanks. "God, I ask your forgiveness for my failings and I thank you for all your blessings."
Review your day. "God, help me to review the events of this day in order to recognize your blessings and my shortcomings."
Ask for help from the Spirit. "God, you know my needs better than I know them. Give me your light and help as I review this day."
AFTERNOON P.A. PRAYER
Each afternoon, the STUCO Pastoral Representative closes the day with a short prayer over the P.A. system. After the first part of his prayer, he invokes, "And we dedicate all of our thoughts, words, and actions" and the community responds in unision, "to the greater glory of God!" This reminder is the final word of a school day at SLUH.
Reconciliation
SLUH offers its students numerous opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
- Throughout the school year, the Sacrament is available during one Activity Period a week. While the chapel remains under renovation, check with Campus Ministry for where this will happen.
- One day in Advent and one day in Lent, theology classes spend a day of class for students to have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament.
- Many retreats offer an opportunity for the Sacrament as part of the retreat schedule.
Additionally, students can make appointments to receive the Sacrament at other times. Contact Fr. Matt Stewart, SJ at mstewart@sluh.org to arrange a time to receive the Sacrament.
