Give a marketable security to SLUH

Gifts of publicly-traded securities can be a tax-wise method of giving because you:

may claim a charitable tax deduction based on the gift’s full fair-market-value (average of the high and low trading price on the transfer date) of the security.
avoid paying capital gains tax on the security if it has appreciated since you acquired it.

If you plan to initiate a securities transfer to SLUH, please refer to the instruction sheet linked here and contact us so we can assure the transfer is complete and the gift is attributed to the appropriate donor.

Give through my donor advised fund

Donor-advised funds (DAF) are charitable giving vehicle that allows donors to make charitable contributions at any time, with an immediate tax benefit, while maintaining flexibility on timing for grants.

You transfer cash or other assets to a tax-exempt sponsoring organization such as a public foundation. You can then recommend – but not direct – how much and how often money is granted. In addition, you avoid the cost and complexities of managing a private foundation.

In return, you qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction at the time you contribute to the account. This also allows for a centralized giving and record-keeping system in one location.

Make Qualified Charitable Distribution from my IRA

Any individual who is 70 1/2 or older can make a charitable gift (Qualified Charitable Distribution) up to $100,000 from their IRA that will reduce their taxable income.

Individuals 72 and older must take a Required Minimum Distribution from their traditional IRA each year. This RMD can be directed as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) to St. Louis U. High or another charity to reduce your taxable income.

To make a gift from your IRA to SLUH, contact your IRA custodian and request that a Qualified Charitable Distribution be made to SLUH. Provide your IRA custodian with this information:

Learn about Long-Term Giving Options (Wills, Trust, Etc)

NAMING SLUH IN YOUR WILL OR TRUST

You may leave a legacy at SLUH by naming the school in your will or trust. You may designate a specific dollar amount, a percentage of the estate or a specific asset.

Giving through your will or trust enables you to:

specify the purpose of your gift.
add to an already established scholarship.
potentially reduce your estate taxes by generating a charitable estate tax deduction.

Gifting Life Insurance

Life insurance can be an effective means to support SLUH, especially if your family no longer needs the policy. There are several approaches to making a gift of this type:

Revocable Beneficiary Designation
You can name SLUH as a partial or full beneficiary of a life insurance policy. You will retain full control of the policy during your lifetime, and the school will receive the insurance proceeds upon your death. Your estate will receive a charitable estate tax deduction for the amount of the gift provided to SLUH upon your death.

Gift an Existing Policy on Which Premiums Are Still Being Paid
You may also gift a life insurance policy on which premiums are still being paid by irrevocably transferring ownership of the policy to SLUH. You may receive a charitable income tax deduction if the policy has cash value. Since SLUH will be required to pay the remaining premiums on the policy to prevent it from lapsing, you will make an annual tax-deductible gift to the school that is equal to the premium owed, and SLUH will make the premium payments to the insurance company.

Give a “Paid -Up” Life Insurance Policy
You may transfer ownership of a paid-up life insurance policy (one on which you no longer are required to make premium payments) as an irrevocable gift to SLUH. You may receive a charitable income tax deduction.

Gift a New Policy
Creating a new policy with SLUH as owner is a great way to provide long-term support to SLUH that is exponentially larger than your original investment. You would work with SLUH to take out a new insurance policy, name SLUH as owner at the time the policy is issued and make tax-deductible contributions equivalent to the premium payments each year to SLUH to keep the policy in force. SLUH would then make the premium payments to the insurance company.

Beneficiary Designations

Naming SLUH as beneficiary of your retirement plan, life insurance policy or commercial annuity is simple and you retain the right to change or amend the beneficiary designation.

Donating these assets is an excellent tax-planning strategy since distributions to SLUH are not subject to income and estate classes. Distributions made through beneficiary designations are not subject to probate.

It is also possible to designate SLUH as beneficiary on bank and brokerage accounts through a transfer on death designation.

Charitable Gift Annuities (click here for more information) and Charitable Remainder Trusts (click here for more information) allow donors to support St. Louis University High School and feel confident that they have dependable income in their retirement years.

Create an endowed scholarship

The endowed scholarship program provides an opportunity for benefactors to give the gift of SLUH to future generations.

Donors are able to honor and recognize significant individuals – such as alumni, faculty or family – when creating the scholarship.

Partially endowed scholarships begin at $30,000; a fully endowed scholarship requires an investment of $325,000. Presidential Scholarships are $1,000,000.
