Mathematics
All SLUH students are required to take three years of mathematics. The typical sequence is Algebra, Geometry, and Precalculus. For incoming freshmen who test out of Algebra I, the typical sequence is Geometry, Precalculus, and Calculus the first three years.
Honors courses are available for underclassmen in Geometry and PreCalculus for students who are highly motivated in the area of mathematics and have demonstrated by their performance in previous math courses that they are talented and interested in the study of mathematics. Teacher recommendation is required for admission into these courses.
All mathematics courses in the senior year are electives. AP Statistics, AP Calculus BC and AP Calculus AB are advanced placement college credit courses taken for the entire year. Honors Precalculus I, Precalculus II, Mathematics for Data Science, and Honors Probability & Statistics are offered for one semester only.
It is the goal of the mathematics department that all teachers will incorporate as much modern technology into their courses as possible. All students will master the use of the graphing calculator (TI 84 Plus or TI 84 Plus CE) while the computer and iPad, specifically Desmos, Sketchpad, and Geogebra, will be used for demonstration as well as hands-on learning tools when appropriate.
