2018 Spring Sports Recap
By Chris Muskopf '90, Athletic Director
Although this is a spring sports recap, there are some unmentioned accomplishments from the close of the winter season that deserve mentioning:
Racquetball
After finishing as the runner-up in the State Racquetball Tournament, the Jr. Bills traveled to Portland, Oregon, for this year’s National Championships. Some stellar performances there landed the program its eighth consecutive National Championship! Congratulations to Program Director Stephen Deves and Head Coach Robert Hoffmann and all the boys in the program on another amazing season.
Rifle
Coach Will Bresnahan led a young rifle squad to the Regionals in April and brought home a fifth-place finish that qualified the program for the National Championships in June in Port Clinton, Ohio. Good luck to the Rifle Bills as they train for and compete in the National Championships!
Our 10 spring sports endured a cold and wet beginning to the competitive portion of the season, but persevered to end the year on a very high note.
Baseball
A combination of experienced upperclassmen and eager underclassmen propelled the varsity baseball team to an impressive list of achievements. The team avoided some of the inclement weather in the early portion of the season by taking a spring break trip to Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida, where it recorded three wins on the first weekend of the season. The team suffered through weather claiming all but one of its scheduled games in its two tournaments, but tallied late season wins over MCC foes Chaminade, St. John Vianney, and De Smet Jesuit. After wins in the district tournament over Gateway STEM and Kirkwood, the team’s season ended with a loss in a rematch with St. John Vianney in the district final.
Golf
In Coach Scott Gilbert’s last season at the helm of the golf program, the Jr. Bill duffers registered several amazing accomplishments. The varsity squad participated in five regular season tournaments, claiming the top spot in two and finishing no lower than fourth in any of the other three. The team navigated the weather and managed to salvage seven regular season dual matches, winning four. Sparked by senior Jack FitzPatrick’s score of 68, the team claimed the district title with the best score recorded at any district tournament in the state. Three golfers qualified out of the sectional round for the MSHSAA Championships. In Kansas City at that tournament, sophomore Ray Winter landed in sixth-place, senior Louie Perotti claimed a tie for 14th-place, and senior Jack Wachter finished tied for 28th. Congratulations to this year’s golfers and thanks to Coach Gilbert for his leadership of the golf program.
Inline Hockey
The Inline Hockey program saw a surge in numbers this spring that allowed it to return to having C, JV, and varsity teams. Program director, Tim O’Neil, in his last season with the program, paved the way for those teams to play some tremendous hockey. Specifically, the varsity team emerged from the regular season as the fifth seed for the postseason. The team upset fourth-seeded Seckman with wins in game two of the quarterfinal series and an overtime win in the decisive mini-game. The team ended its season in the next round, as it fell in two games in the semifinal series to top-seeded Oakville. Thanks to Coach O’Neil for his dedication to the sport of inline hockey and for his tenure as the leader of the SLUH program.
Lacrosse
When new varsity head coach Andrew Toussaint came on board near the end of the off-season contact period, he set forth a plan to implement his system and push the team towards its potential. Coach Toussaint and his staff guided and developed the team to some amazing heights. A regular season overtime win over Eureka featured a game-tying goal off a faceoff with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation. The Lacrosse Bills retained the Fr. Marco Cup thanks to an incredible comeback from a 10-1 halftime deficit. The varsity lacrosse team defeated John Burroughs and Eureka on its way to a runner-up finish in the MSLA Championship Tournament.
Rugby
The rugby program expanded its 2018 schedule to include Brother Rice from Chicago, Springfield, Illinois, Notre Dame de LaSalette, and St. Thomas Aquinas in Kansas. The team defeated local foes CBC and Eureka and snagged a second-place finish at this spring’s Ruggerfest Tournament. The rugby squad defeated Liberty North in the state semifinal before falling in a close contest to the Kansas City Jr. Blues in the state final.
Tennis
The tennis program gained valuable experience during the regular season and played its best tennis as it progressed through the postseason. The varsity team’s number two seed held in team competition in the district tournament as it defeated Kirkwood in the semifinals and lost to Lindbergh in the finals. Freshman Leo Da Silva and doubles team Victor Stefanescu (Soph.)/Noah Sandidge (Sr.) navigated through the district tournament and the sectional round to advance to the MSHSAA Championships in Springfield. Stefanescu and Sandidge went 1-2 and bowed out of the doubles bracket on Friday. Da Silva went 3-2 overall and brought home a 7th-place medal.
Track and Field
The track and field program navigated its way through some weather-related schedule adjustments and recorded some significant achievements this spring. The varsity team recorded a tie with Lafayette at the Lindbergh Invitational and claimed the overall top spot at the MCC Championships. The squad survived tough competition in the district and sectional rounds to send several representatives to the MSHSAA Championships. Senior high jumper, Daniel McMurran, placed 12th. Senior javelin thrower and owner of the current school record, Trevor Jones, placed 16th. The 4x800 relay team - Patrick Hetlage (Jr.), Paul Burka (Sr.), Charles Perry (Jr.), and Lazarus Williams (So.) - placed 3rd. Williams also placed 3rd in the 800 meter run.
Ultimate Frisbee
Under the leadership of alums Jeff Ullery and Mark McBride, the ultimate frisbee program saw a tremendous resurgence in 2018. The team went 4-4 during the regular season, won 3 games at the Neuqua Knockout Tournament, and, despite being seeded 12th for the postseason tournament, finished in 8th place!
Volleyball
Head Coach Jeff Cheak and the members of the volleyball program put together an amazingly dominant season this spring, navigating its way to an undefeated season! Along the way, the team claimed titles at the Parkway Central Tournament and the Lafayette Tournament. The team did not lose a set in any regular season match, nor in any postseason match. Opponents only succeeded in pushing the varsity team to a 3rd set in five matches in the above mentioned tournaments! Congratulations to Coach Cheak and the members of the varsity team on capping their undefeated season with the 2018 Missouri Class 4 Boys Volleyball Championship!
Water Polo
Congratulations to both the JV and varsity water polo teams on capturing the title in their respective postseason tournaments! Along the way to its fourth consecutive title and 20th in program history, the varsity team claimed titles at the York Tournament in Elmhurst, Illinois, and at the De Smet Invitational. The team lost one match all season and that was in Elmhurst to a team from Wilmette. This season also marks the fourth consecutive without a loss to any of the St. Louis area teams. Congratulations to varsity head coach Paul Baudendistel '90 on a great season and on his induction into the Missouri Water Polo Hall of Fame!
