SLUH's 1970 varsity football team was undersized and not very fast, had no home field, and played half its games against Top 10 teams in the state of Missouri. Improbably, they went on to win the Missouri Class 4A state championship – the only one in school history.
It had been an arduous, emotional season for the players from the Class of 1971 and their underclassmen teammates. The great but naïve ambition of the young Baby Boomers who played on or supported that team was tempered by the frightening, threatening social turmoil of the late 1960s. In addition to the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, an often-violent protest culture in America and a generation conflict, these teenagers had to cope with a very personal tragedy. Just before the season began, their Student Council Vice President died of gunshot wounds he suffered as the victim of a robbery attempt two weeks prior. They devoted their season to Ed Hawk ‘71, their fallen friend. The football field soon became a refuge for those young men.
Joe Castellano ’71, Student Council President and one of the football team captains, was so moved by his team’s championship season that he wrote a book, Bull in the Ring / Football and Faith: Refuge in a Troubled Time, which captures in compelling detail highlights from both on and off the field. It is a story that relives season milestones and brings to life legendary characters like Paul Martel, Ebbie Dunn and Fr. Phil Kellett, S.J. It is also a story that resonates with non-football aficionados, breathing with real, raw human emotion and weaving universal themes that span from resilience and teamwork, to faith and service.
The SLUH Archive recently met with Castellano and several of his teammates and classmates to discuss their SLUH experience both on and of the football field. The interview is organized into the following categories: Reflecting on Jesuits & Teachers, Senior Project, Equity & Inclusion, Loss & Hardship, Paul Martel & Ebbie Dunn, Championship Season Memories, Bull in the Ring, SLUH, and Manresa (monthly class meetings focused on Ignatian spirituality).
The final video captures the panel discussion at the book signing event on November 15, 2017 at SLUH. (Note: the audio begins at about 40 seconds.)
