This fall season, SLUH athletes and coaches continue a long and storied winning tradition. With playoffs fast approaching, our Cross Country, Football, Soccer and Swimming & Diving programs build on success at both the individual and team levels. Catch up on where they stand and when they compete with the following update from Athletic Director Chris Muskopf ’90.
CROSS COUNTRY
The cross country team heads into this Saturday's sectional race after a dominating performance in Jackson at last Saturday's district race, in which the Jr. Bills placed all seven runners in the top 10 of the event! The 2019 regular season featured first place finishes by the varsity team at Granite City, the Parkway West Invitational and the MCC Championships (16th consecutive, five runners in the top five spots). The sectional race will be held on November 2 at Parkway Central at 10:30am. The MSHSAA Class 4 Boys Championship race is in Columbia at the Gans Creek course on November 9 at 12:05pm.
FOOTBALL
The varsity football team concluded the regular season with a 51-6 win on senior night over Vashon, solidifying a 5-4 record and the 5th seed in Class 6, District 1. In addition to the senior night win, this year's team registered wins at Battle (2018 Class 5 Semifinalist), at Jefferson City, at St. John Vianney (2018 Class 5 Champion), and at Trinity Catholic (2018 Class 3 Champion). Postseason play begins with a district quarterfinal contest at CBC on Friday, November 1 at 7:00pm.
SOCCER
The varsity soccer team concluded the regular season with a 16-6-1 record. Milestones during the regular season include: two victories over CBC (1st time since 2015), two victories over St. John Vianney, the championship of the inaugural SLUH Jr. Billiken Classic (victories over Parkway South, Mehlville and St Mary's) and an 11-game unbeaten streak between September 21 and October 18. Based in a large part on a stretch of six games during the 11-game unbeaten streak in which the Jr. Bills did not allow a goal, the Jr. Bills have outscored their opponents 38-18. Games in the district tournament begin on November 5 at DeSmet Jesuit with the Jr. Bills squaring off with DeSmet Jesuit at 6:30pm.
SWIMMING & DIVING
The 2018 MSHSAA Class 2 champions have logged an impressive regular season in defense of last season's state title. In its nine dual or tri-meet competitions, the AquaBills are a spotless 9-0. In addition, the swimmers and divers have brought home the top spot in three multi-school invitationals, including the highly competitive CoMo Invitational held at the Mizzou Natatorium. Prior to the MSHSAA Class 2 Championships at the Rec-Plex on November 15-16, the Jr. Bills will compete in the MICDS Invitational (November 1) and the MCC Championships (November 2, 5-6).
