Following the conclusion of the 2017 fall sports season, we look back at some highlights:
Cross Country
The cross country program rode the wave of dominant sectional and district championship performances to a 10th place team finish at the Class 4 MSHSAA Boys Cross Country Championships. Senior Paul Burka led the way for the Jr. Bills in Jefferson City, earning All-State honors with a 25th-place individual finish. 2017 marks the 14th consecutive year that the program has been represented by at least one All-State runner, and the 25th consecutive year that the program entered a full team at the state meet. The varsity also recorded the 2nd-ever “perfect score” at the MCC Conference Championship by placing our top six runners as the top six runners in the event. With 18 sub-17:00 performances turned in by five different underclassmen and 10 of the top 22 runners in the program being freshmen or sophomores, the program appears to be positioned to be highly competitive in the 2018 season and beyond.
Football
In the first season under Head Coach Mike Jones, the Jr. Bills fought through a plethora of injuries to accomplish some remarkable feats in their 10 games. On September 8th, the squad overcame a 4th quarter deficit to earn Coach Jones his first victory in the MCC with a 28-24 win over DeSmet Jesuit. The momentum continued as the team traveled to Jefferson City the next weekend and broke a 9-game losing streak to the Jays in registering the first win versus the Jays since 1985 by a score of 38-20. After three consecutive games being held to just one touchdown, the offense exploded in the last two games, recording 42 points in each of those efforts. The eye-popping offensive numbers in those two games included a total of 253 yards rushing, quarterback Austin Hannah throwing for a combined 45 completions, 747 yards, and seven touchdowns, and receiver A.J. Hardin hauling in 22 passes for 436 yards and four touchdowns. A.J. set the school record for receptions, with 14, in the Jackson game. While a nucleus of talented seniors will graduate in the spring, the coaches are excited about the offseason conditioning program and look forward to the first practice on August 6th, 2018.
Soccer
In the 25th season of Coach Charlie Martel’s tenure as Head Varsity Soccer Coach, the Jr. Bills finished 21-4-1, marking the 17th time that Coach Martel has led a squad to 20 or more wins. The 20 seniors and 5 underclassmen on the 2017 squad take with them the distinction of being part of Coach Martel’s 500th win at SLUH, a 4-0 defeat of St. John Vianney on September 5th at the CBC Tournament. The team went on to earn the championship of that tournament by winning all three games and outscoring St. John Vianney, CBC, and DeSmet Jesuit by a combined tally of 9-1. With a 69-12-13 record (.734 winning percentage) over all four levels of the program in the 74th season in program history, the 75th season of SLUH soccer holds the potential to be one of the most special in school history.
Swimming & Diving
The 2017 season was an historic one for the SLUH Swimming and Diving program. The program ran off another undefeated season in regular season dual and tri meets, claimed the top spot at both the DeSmet Jesuit Invitational and the Lindbergh Invitational, and won the MCC Championship for a seventh consecutive season. In competitive fields at the CoMo Invitational, the Marquette Relays, and the Ladue Invitational, the squad grabbed 2nd, 3rd, and 3rd, respectively. These events served as a springboard for the Class 2 MSHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships, for which the Jr. Bills qualified 17 swimmers and divers. Those 17 swimmers and divers earned 18 spots in the consolation or championship events on day two of the Championships. With a top four team finish hanging in the balance with one event remaining, the Jr. Bill 4x100 relay team set a school record–the 4th school record set during the season–and claimed a 2nd place finish in both the race and the Championships. As the topper to this amazing season, Head Coach Lindsey Ehret was chosen as the Missouri Class 2 Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year. Congratulations to Coach Ehret, the rest of the coaches, and all the members of the swimming and diving program on an incredible set of accomplishments this fall season.
Winter sports–basketball, ice hockey, racquetball, rifle, and wrestling–will begin competing in earnest shortly after Thanksgiving. Check @SLUHAthletics and sluh.org for news, scores, and updates.
