On August 18, SLUH Principal Fr. Ian Gibbons, SJ professed final vows in the Society of Jesus at the Mass of the Holy Spirit for this new school year. Jesuits are called to final vows by their Superior General in Rome, Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ, and this was the first time that a Jesuit has professed final vows at SLUH in decades. The liturgy was celebrated by the new Central and Southern Provincial Fr. Tom Greene, SJ.
The three traditional vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience are taken by every Jesuit, and their final vows include a fourth vow of special obedience to the Pope. Jesuits initially take simple vows after two years of novitiate and renew those vows annually. After extensive study of philosophy and theology, as well as years of apostolic work, a Jesuit can be called to profess final vows. Typically it takes around eleven years for a Jesuit to be ordained a priest and another eleven to receive final vows. Fr. Gibbons entered the Jesuits in 1995, was ordained in 2006, and took his final vows after 25 years.
