SLUH 101 INFORMATION FOR THE CLASS OF 2028
SLUH 101: All incoming freshmen will take SLUH 101. We anticipate much of the class will take this course during the summer to help prepare for a successful start to the year and earn credit that will give them more schedule flexibility and a free period during the regular school year. This course is specifically designed to:
-
Ease the transition to a rigorous Jesuit high school environment
-
Foster an intentional, prayerful community and increase brotherhood for the class
-
Build academic skills that will lead to success at SLUH and beyond
-
Master the technological skills required for SLUH students to be successful in and out of the classroom
-
Improve self-management and interpersonal skills to encourage meaningful collaboration
-
Expose our newest students to the wisdom of our current student leaders as well as successful alumni
-
Learn what it means to be a student at SLUH who embraces the mission to becoming Men for Others
Summer Computer Programming and Health
In addition to SLUH 101, many of the incoming freshmen will elect to take a Computer Programming class and a Health class during the summer prior to freshman year. As with SLUH 101, taking these required classes during the Summer allows students to meet classmates, become familiar with the building, and creates greater availability during freshman year to take extra Fine Arts or computer science classes and/or a free period.
Required Math Prep Class for Some Students
At the request of families or as a recommendation from the admissions process, some incoming freshmen will also take prep classes in math.
Summer School Daily Schedule
A typical summer day at SLUH consists of two standard full class sessions with a lunch break.
-
AM Session: 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (SLUH 101 or Math or Combination of Computer Programming and Health)
-
Lunch: 11:30 a.m. -12:15 p.m. (Food available for purchase each day in the SLUH Si Commons)
-
PM Session: 12:15-2:45 p.m. (SLUH 101 or Math or Combination of Computer Programming and Health)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT SUMMER SCHOOL TUITION AND ATTENDANCE POLICIES WILL BE GIVEN DURING THE FRESHMAN CLASS REGISTRATION MEETING ON FEBRUARY 29, 2024.
What materials and supplies do students need for Summer School?
ALL SLUH freshmen and returning students must have their school-issued iPad fully charged with them every day of Summer School classes.
All students should have basic school supplies (pens and pencils to write with, one two-pocket folder and a single notebook for taking notes).
For SLUH 101, Computers, Health and Math all materials will be provided on the first day of class. There is no Health textbook for the summer class.
For sophomore and junior theology, and any other courses, text and materials needed will be communicated by the teachers later in the spring.

Do students have required Summer Reading?
The Freshman English summer reading assignment is American Born Chinese, by Gene Luen Yang (ISBN 0312384483) (please note that this is a graphic novel: it tells the story in comic book style panels). Freshman English teachers will administer an assessment of the Freshman English summer reading on the first day of class.
There will be no all-school reading book this year. Students will only be required to read the Freshman English book assigned above.
Some summer books are available through MBS Direct, our online textbook provider. You will be notified when the MBS Direct portal opens. You may also search Amazon or other online book retailers for new and used copies of the books listed.

What is Freshman Orientation Day?
Freshman Orientation will take place Wednesday, August 14 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Lunch will not be provided as part of the day, so please plan accordingly.
Students should dress in formal attire for yearbook and student ID photos. This means that students must wear a dress shirt with a tie, dress pants, socks, dress shoes and a coat or sweater vest.
Students will hear welcome presentations from the administration, have time to meet with their senior advisors, take a guided tour of the building with their class schedules in order to know their way around the campus for their first day of classes, and have time to organize their lockers, which will also be assigned on that day.
All students will receive their student planners for the school year that they are to use for recording daily assignments, review sessions with teachers, and daily activities. There will be a link to the entire parent-student handbook and school calendar included in the student planner as well. Students are expected to have their student planners with them for each class during the school year.
Student iPads will be needed on that day. Phones, if brought, should be locked in the student's locker or placed in the class cell phone holder for the morning if asked.
What is the Freshman Parent Orientation Night?
The Freshman Parent Orientation Night on Thursday, August 15 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. will introduce the parents to the school counselors as well as the rest of the administrators and teachers who will work all year to help the freshmen adjust to life as Jr. Billikens.
We will discuss the schedule of initiation events for the freshmen during their first and second semester and the most impactful ways parents can support their sons during this important time of transition. SLUH asks that at least one parent/guardian attend this event.
Mass will be offered prior to the meeting in the Chapel of the Beloved Disciple at 5:15 p.m. for any interested parents in observance of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A social reception follows the meeting.
What is "Running of the Bills?"
Traditionally, Running of the Bills takes place at the first Friday home football game. This year, that date is Friday, September 6.
For student experience: More information regarding this special day, which includes Freshman Fun Day in the afternoon, will be announced at a later date.
For parents: All parents are invited to attend a pregame party from 4:30-5:30 p.m. outside on the Drury Plaza on September 6. You'll have a chance to meet other freshman parents at this social hour before watching your son get painted blue and run with his classmates into the SLUH stadium for the game. There is no cost to attend or need to RSVP. We can't wait to welcome you!

When can books be purchased?
What is Powerschool? What is Canvas? How can I access them?
PowerSchool is the SLUH system for grade reporting and course registration. Parents will receive PowerSchool access as part of the incoming Freshman Academic Orientation in March.
Canvas is the SLUH learning management software. Parents will receive access to Canvas shortly after the start of the school year.
When are academic schedules sent?
Is there required technology?
SLUH supports the integration of appropriate technology into classrooms to better serve our faculty and students. Faculty members are equipped with personal computers and the technology needed to enhance their curriculum as desired. The school has made significant technological upgrades in recent past and continues to invest in technology that supports our curriculum and helps to fulfill our mission.
SLUH provides devices to all incoming freshmen. A fee of $250.00 will be billed on your tuition statement. Students are required to use the school-issued device for classes.
Athletics & Physicals
- When do fall sports begin?
- What are the instructions for physicals, how to create a PRIVIT account and upload/complete all medical information?
When do fall sports begin?
The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) has set the Fall 2024 sports season to officially begin on Monday, August 12.
For information on times and locations for the various sports and their activities, please visit the website, follow @SLUHAthletics on X, and check your email for updates during the summer.
What are the instructions for physicals, how to create a PRIVIT account and upload/complete all medical information?
Access steps in completing a PRIVIT Profile
Every member of the Class of 2028, along with those sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in playing a fall sport, must have a Medical Eligibility Form uploaded to the SLUH PRIVIT site by Friday, August 2. In addition, all other forms, signatures and permissions on the PRIVIT site must also be completed by Friday, August 2.
Any students (freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors) whose PRIVIT account is not complete and approved by Monday, August 12 will not be able to participate in fall sports until the information in the account is completed and approved. For freshmen, per state health guidelines and SLUH policy, a student's immunization record and Medical Eligibility Form must be completed and uploaded to Privit by the first day of school. Any student whose PRIVIT account is not in compliance with state health guidelines and SLUH policy will be excluded from classes/sports until compliance is achieved.
While MSHSAA policy permits a completed physical examination form to be valid for a two-year period from the date of the physical examination, all other medical documents required for participation in athletics/school must still be completed/updated annually. The documentation that must be completed annually includes: Parent Permission/Insurance Verification, Student Agreement, Concussion Education Materials/Parent and Student Signature, Emergency Contact Information, and the Transportation Consent Form.
The two-year period of validity for a physical could result in a physical expiring during the middle of a season. At the time that the physical expires, the student-athlete will become immediately ineligible and unable to practice or compete until a new physical exam has been completed and the necessary forms have been uploaded to the SLUH PRIVIT site.
Reminders
-
The MSHSAA Medical History Form (Step 1), the Preparticipation Physical Examination Form (Step 2), and the Medical Eligibility Form (Step 3) must be printed from the SLUH website or the MSHSAA website. The Medical History Form (Step 1) and the Preparticipation Physical Examination Form (Step 2), and the Medical Eligibility Form (Step 3) must be completed by your physician. Note that the History Form and Physical Examination Form will be retained by your doctor at his/her office. These two forms should not be uploaded to PRIVIT. The only form to be uploaded to PRIVIT is the Medical Eligibility Form (Step 3) and a current Immunization Form for Freshmen and any updated Immunization Form for upperclassmen. You can download the three forms here (again, remember that you will only upload the Medical Eligibility Form and current Immunization Form to Privit).
-
For administrative purposes, all PRIVIT accounts will be archived and reset as of May 31 of a particular year. Therefore, it is important to note that any completed forms other than the Physical/Medical Eligibility Form and Immunization records – if completed on PRIVIT before June 1 – would need to be completed again before a student would be eligible to participate.
-
A complete review of all submitted documents by a member of the SLUH medical staff is necessary to make sure all forms are complete and all medical conditions are noted and able to be communicated to our coaches. Thus, the SLUH medical staff requires up to 72 hours to review and approve all physical files.

Do students purchase a lock from SLUH?
All freshmen will receive one (1) lock during Freshman Orientation for their main school locker, which must be locked at all times. This lock is the only one approved to be used for student lockers and is registered through the school office. You may not bring in your own lock.
Additional locks may be purchased for sports from the Jr. Bill Store.
Do students who participate in band need a locker and lock?
Please contact Mr. Jeff Pottinger, Band & Orchestra Director, at jpottinger@sluh.org.
Do students return to lockers between classes?
When are school mixers and formal dances?
School mixers are casual dances held on the SLUH campus, which provide Jr. Bills the opportunity to mix/meet girls from local high schools. A small entrance fee is charged at the door. Boys must have a SLUH ID for admittance, and any girl with a pre-printed ticket and a valid high school ID can attend. The mixers are held twice per year – traditionally the first Friday evening of the new school year, and the weekend of Mission Week. Details about cost and times can be found on the website and by listening to the announcements in school.
Formal dances are held 1-2 times per year. Tickets for all formal dances are sold in advance and boys must have a date to attend. Parents receive a letter prior to each dance detailing cost, date, location, expected behavior and a faculty contact telephone number.
Are the SLUH gym shorts and shirt required?
Please explain the JUG system.
A JUG (Justice Under God) is a one-hour detention served after school for receiving four or five demerits. Some offenses may warrant an automatic JUG. Students are to report immediately after school to the Assistant Principal for Student Life to serve the JUG. JUGs must be served either that day or the following day.
