StuCo’s annual 12 days of Christmas brings Christmas spirit to halls of SLUH

With the season of Advent already underway and Christmas just around the corner, StuCo is helping remind Jr. Billikens that exams aren’t the only reason to be excited for the coming weeks.

The 12 days of Christmas events, which StuCo members decided to continue this year, help to add a bit more Christmas spirit especially with the damper exams bring on students’ Christmas spirit.

“SLUH can at times be very challenging, but having fun activities can switch up the pace of early December SLUH,” said Student Body Vice President Chandler Flowers. “And all these events help to build a sense of brotherhood and community that I love.”

The Christmas festivities and the first day of StuCo 12 Days of Christmas started on Dec. 1 with the famous pancake establishment Chris’s Cakes rewarding any student with five dollars and the willingness to wake up at regular time on a late start day with delicious pancakes.

“Chris’s Cakes was really exciting because there were a lot of people coming in early to get some food,” said Student Body President Patrick Mehan. “I’m not a morning guy, but getting there early was actually a lot of fun.”

The festivities continued on Dec. 2 with a nail-biting Bashball Championship game in the field house. The game had Senior advisory M110 going up against the Junior advisory 216c. Although it was a close match, Senior Advisory M110 won the Fall Bash Championship, 4-2. Senior Louis Kertz was selected as the “Blue Crew Athlete of the Game” after his bash put the seniors up 3-1.

Said Kertz, “I really just want to thank my teammates and … the guy who set me up for my bash.”

The competition between both Advisories and grade levels helps to cultivate SLUH spirit through the friendly competition and form memories to last a lifetime.

The third day of Christmas and the start of a new week brought students to the old switchboard, which was fashioned into the “Switchbar” for the second time this year. The temporary cafe offered coffee, hot chocolate, donuts, and conversation. StuCo made sure to have workers on site during all times of the day so that students could rejuvenate themselves for their test the following period or enjoy some hot chocolate in a comfortable couch seat. The switchboard itself was decorated just for the occasion with wrapping paper around the desk and lights and snowflakes hanging from the ceiling.

Tuesday gave students the opportunity to put their artistic skills into practice with a Christmas cookie decorating activity free of charge during lunch. Students lathered their cookies in enough sprinkles and icing to last them 30 minutes into their next period class and proudly showed off their beautiful creations to their friends.

Wednesday let students enjoy the Christmas classic Elf in the Currigan Room during Activity Period and Lunch, with complimentary popcorn as a snack.

“Some guys were sitting in the back and doing homework and some were in the front sitting on couches and watching the movies so it was a really nice and relaxing environment,” said StuCo moderator Megan Menne.

A calmer, more relaxing event lets students recover from all the festivities they participated in while giving other students who may not involve themselves in some of the more action-heavy events the chance to also get into the Christmas spirit.

Next week there will be several more activities to look forward to. On Monday there will be pictures with Santa (Director of Security Dan Schulte) and Mrs. Claus (English teacher Jamie Cordia) taking place in the Commons during Activity Period. Many students will remember this event from last year.

“I’m pretty excited for pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus. I know both Mr. Schulte and Ms. Cordia—sorry, Santa and Mrs. Claus—and they are two people who really get into the Christmas spirit this time of year,” said senior Anthony Fahim. “I remember seeing them do it last year. They were having a blast and there was a huge line of kids just waiting to take pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus.”

Tuesday will bring a Christmas party for every advisory and Wednesday will be the beloved Teacher Karaoke, which is sponsored by the National Honor Society, but supported and advertised by StuCo as a part of the 12 Days celebration. Thursday, StuCo will provide “SLUHber” transportation from the student parking lot to the school entrance in luxury golf carts. Finally, StuCo’s 12 Days of Christmas will conclude on Friday with a coffee house in the Currigan Room for an energized start to exams.

“The coffee house is a great way to start off exams,” Fahim said. “Getting yourself a cup of joe and a few doughnuts is a great way to start the morning.”

StuCo’s 12 Days of Christmas differs from other StuCo projects in that it is up to that year’s group of students whether to host the event.

“In general, the goal of StuCo during this time of year is to just create some fun and cheer. The 12 Days of Christmas is something that was done in the past but was not required. But these guys wanted to do it again this year,” said StuCo moderator Stephen Deves. “They’ve been passionate about it. They’ve been on top of making things happen and it seems like the students are really enjoying it.”

But StuCo’s passion for Christmas spirit goes past the events they put on. They’ve also been working to make SLUH jollier in other ways. Orders have already been taken for this year’s SLUH Christmas sweater, which has become a staple of StuCo’s merchandise roster in recent years. Additionally, StuCo released a music video entitled “U-High Christmas Carol,” which features a creative spin on the song “Wonderful Christmastime.

“Events like the 12 days of Christmas remind me of the SLUH community and environment that I love so much,” said Mehan. “It reminds me that I’m cared for and to really enjoy my time at SLUH while I’m still here.”
