Weather Balloon

At 9:55 a.m. Tuesday morning, science teacher Bill Anderson successfully launched his semiannual weather balloon with his senior environmental STEM class after being delayed by the FAA for a short amount of time.

The launch was facilitated entirely by students, split into groups to tie the strings of the balloon, fill the balloon with helium, and program its cameras to take timed photos during the flight. The purpose of the launch was to measure the speed of the balloon as it ascended and descended, in addition to the temperature, percent of oxygen in the air, percent humidity, ultraviolet rays, and air pressure.

The balloon peaked at around 98,000 feet and ended up landing a mile off the Illinois-Indiana border in New Harmony, Ind.

Punching Bag

As announced by an all-school email from Director of Sports Medicine and Performance Jon McCutchen, a new punching bag has been installed in the speed room. Upon opening the email, many students noticed the clear, cautionary message: students are under no circumstances allowed to hang on the punching bag. Consequences will be severe.

Last day of Chapel

The chapel hosted its final Mass this morning, as construction will begin soon, starting with hazardous materials abatement. This is the next phase of the Go Forth campaign’s series of renovations. Starting on Monday, the theater loge will be set up as a chapel and will be used for daily Masses. It will also be open for silent prayer and reflection throughout the day, just as the chapel normally is.

Tornado?

On Wednesday, temperatures rose to an unseasonable high, bringing worries of a possible tornado. A tornado watch was issued, and Assistant Principal for Student Life Brock Kesterson announced over the speakers that the school should be vigilant and ready in the case of a tornado warning. No tornado warnings sounded, so students stayed on their normal schedule without having to make their way to a safe place.
