Conversation of the Week: Charlie Isom-Mcall

This week I met with junior Charlie Isom-McCall, the starting shooting guard in his third year on the Varsity basketball team. Isom-McCall scored 12 points in SLUH’s narrow 71-69 victory against Vianney last Friday.

Vincent Weinbauer: How have you guys come together as a unit this year?

Charlie Isom-Mccall: I think over time as we’ve played more games we have done better in helping each other out by worrying less about us as individuals and growing more as a team. We hold more accountability for each other and I think that has really helped us form stronger chemistry throughout the year.

VW: This year, specifically in the MCC, how have guys performed well with a couple of bad breaks? What is the team doing right and how will you guys beat these teams?

CI: So far the MCC hasn’t gone exactly how we wanted it to go. As you know we’ve lost both of our games by two, in moving forward and continuing to play some of the same teams we are going to close the two- or three-point gaps that ultimately lost us those two games.

VW: In the Vianney last week you ended with 14 points and the team took away the win, what was your mentality going into it?

CI: We weighed in heavy all week, we were set on allowing no threes due to their reputation, although we didn't hold them to that we definitely held them to a lot less than they could have put up.

VW: Last year you guys had a solid season and you won districts. Do you think that this year it can be replicated and if so how will you guys do that?

CI: I think that we can for sure go farther than last year but we still have a lot of development to do. Last year we had a lot of seniors that helped us get there but the way that our district is switched around we now have some more advantages. If we play how we are supposed to as a team we can definitely make it further than people think we can and possibly even make it to state.

VW: Earlier in the season CBC was one of the teams you lost to by two points. You guys play them again Friday (tonight). How will the game be different, what will you guys do to win the game?

CI: This time we were looking to bring more energy off the bat and keep that in the tank, main thing it throughout the whole game. Like I said we are going to close those gaps with that energy and have it go our way this time.

VW: Love it.
