This week I sat down with senior Pau Thang to discuss his recent performances and his role as a captain in a young, talented wrestling program. Thang is coming off a strong performance against St. Mary’s were he helped lead the team to a 48-28 victory.
Ben Croat: After a loss on Senior Night, how’d it feel to get a victory at your last meet at the U. High?
Pau Thang: Senior Night was disappointing. We had a tough loss against a tough team but since then we’ve had a real attitude change. We lost to St. Mary’s earlier in the season but it was by only six points so we knew we had a chance. We knew that it was our last meet together at home so we wanted to leave on a good note. We just went for it and in the end it felt good to beat them.
BC: You guys have such a young team this year; speak on your role as a leader for this core group of younger guys.
PT: All these young guys are so athletic but they didn’t have much experience at first so it was a learning experience. But you can see them improving match by match into better wrestlers. For me as a senior, I find it very helpful having them around because it teaches me how to be a leader and how to be a role model for them in and outside of the wrestling room. A lot of these kids are starting so young and so when they’re my age and in my shoes I bet they’ll be better than me right now.
BC: With Districts coming up, what’s your goal for yourself and for this team?
PT: I want to finish top four and qualify for state. If that doesn't happen I still want to wrestle hard and leave it all on the mat for the younger kids to see my example for the future.
BC: I know you’re always trying to cut weight, but what’s your favorite meal during the season?
PT: My favorite food comes from Connor’s dad, Mr. Whalen, and his turkey sandwich. Let’s gooo.
BC: Yes sir, can’t wait to see you out there this weekend.
