FOOD REVIEW: Sonic's Queso burger is "iconic"

Hey, it has been a while. I have been cleared by Dr. Anthony Fauci and more importantly, Mr. Gilbert, to return to life as normal. That being said, I am hungry and I know you are too, so let’s talk queso. No, let’s talk about the Queso Burger.

Sonic Drive-In has re-released their iconic, edgy Queso Burger. If you are torn between Taco Bell and McDonald’s, have you ever thought about having both at the same time? Our good friends over at Sonic came to the rescue with this and to quote Ms. Hannah Montana, “You get the best of both worlds!”

The burger itself is quite simple yet creative. A four-ounce patty is smothered with grilled onions, green chiles, and Sonic’s take on queso. The buns are toasted to perfection and a thin layer of mayo is spread onto each. My initial thoughts included but were not limited to confusion, disgust, and sadness. Although it is not a large burger, its makeup is incredibly frightening. Still, with my Cherry Limeade in hand, I took the first bite.

Wow. Despite the lingering signs of a heart attack in the near future, I was blown away. The combination of nachos and burgers worked, surprisingly. The queso seeped down to the surface of the burger, navigating the cracks and crevices formed by the grilled onions and chiles. Although the flavors worked, I would have really liked to see a bit more consistency in the spread of the toppings. My second bite lacked the grilled onions AND chiles. Regardless, this was still a very good burger.

With all that said, I will be giving this an 8.5/10. I love the concept but I am a little dissatisfied with the end-product. Now I will leave with you some tips for trying this: get extra napkins, do not make plans to work out after, and if you are like me and need some extra protein, throw some bacon on there!
