Rugby destroys Chaminade in first game of season

The St. Louis U. High varsity rugby team had its first match against Chaminade at SLUH last Saturday. The Jr. Bills’ offense performed well in the first half, but couldn’t keep the pressure up for the second. Fortunately, the organization of the defense picked up the slack and SLUH won 37-8.

The Jr. Bills kicked to Chaminade who carried it to the 15-yard line. SLUH won the ruck and pushed the ball closer to the end zone. The offense got ahold of the ball and flicked it out to a receiver who ran it in for a try giving the Jr. Bills an early lead of 7-0.

A long drive from the 30-yard line brought SLUH within reach of another try. After a flick out the Jr. Bills picked up another seven points.

After the kick the Jr. Bills recovered the ball and slowly pushed back towards the end zone. After a tough fight within five yards of the end zone the Jr. Bills put up yet another seven points for a handsome lead of 21.

SLUH kept up the pressure and, after a quick and efficient recovery of the ball, moved up to the end zone to go into the half up 28-0.

Though the offense slowed a little in the second half, SLUH picked up a massive 43-yard drive all the way to the end zone for the last try from SLUH for the game.

The defense held Chaminade back, providing the Jr. Bills with some much-needed breathing room to secure a win.

The SLUH rugby team ended the game with a 31-point lead over Chaminade for their first win of the season.
