Underclassmen Soccer excels and prepares for postseason tournament

With not long left in the soccer season, the underclassman soccer teams of St. Louis U. High look to finish their winning seasons on a high note. SLUH has a historically good underclassman soccer program, but this year's teams are exceeding expectations with substantially positive records. The JV team is currently 13-4-1, the B team is 12-0-5, and the C team is 12-3-2.

The C team has been going strong in the season and has only lost one game out of its past 10 and has a record of 12-3-2. The upcoming SLL tournament will close out the season and show the progress they’ve made over the course of the year. Many players on the C team give credit of their success to their comradery as a class and coach, Assistant Principal of Student Life Brock Kesterson.

“Soccer has been really fun, especially to play with your own class,” said freshman Ben Faris. “Dr. Kesterson is a really great coach.”

This is not a one-sided relationship as Kesterson appreciates and believes in his players’ abilities. Clearly, he believes in the team for a reason based on their success and bond as a team.

“They've come together really quickly and I really love being around the group. I think they love being around each other and I believe that's the biggest strength,” said Keseteron.

The C team plays Lindbergh tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at SLUH for their first game in the SLL tournament. They hope to close out the season on a high note and continue their successful trends.

The C team has seen success in this year's season, but so have the other teams. B team, the only undefeated soccer team in the SLUH program, has a record of 12-0-5. New coach for the B team Thom Champion has stepped up to help lead this team to victory. However, so do the captains who the team looks up to.

“Thanks to our great captains’ leadership, we haven't lost a game yet,” said freshman Alex Schoenekase.

“The team is really connected, I think we really have a chance at winning our upcoming tournament,” said freshman Brian Harrigan.

Similar to the C team, the B team also has an upcoming tournament and the players on the B team are ready to close out the season and finalize their undefeated record. They face CBC in the CBC Tournament at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow.

Lastly, the Junior Varsity team has a record of 13-4-1.  Just like the other teams, the JV team is also in an ongoing tournament and had their last game of the tournament on Wednesday against CBC. This game ended in a 2-0 win for the Jr. Billikens. Tonight, they face John Burroughs at John Burroughs at 4:15.
