Walters to fill interim head coaching role for Varsity Hockey Team

As of Oct. 23, Steve Walters will be the new interim-head coach for the varsity ice hockey team. Walters has been an assistant coach for the program since 2017, and didn’t expect the coaching change.

“It was a complete surprise, I didn’t see it coming at all actually,” said Walters.

Walters understands the culture at SLUH, having seen two of his sons graduate from the school. He won’t be looking to change much with the program, and he and SLUH’s previous head hockey coach Jack Beehan have a very similar coaching style.

“I’m really excited about building on the culture of SLUH and getting through these weird and tough times of COVID-19. The excitement is being a solution in a very tough time where Jack had to step away because of COVID,” said Walters. “What we hope to do is at least provide a positive experience during this frustrating time, and make sure these kids have fun on the ice.”

The team had its first tryout sessions this Monday.
