As a society of excellence, our members hold with great esteem the society's four pillars of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service.
Sophomores and Juniors who have a cumulative GPA of 3.60 by the end of the first semester will receive a letter via email inviting them to complete an NHS membership form.
With the membership form, candidates for NHS will submit verification of 18+ hours of service of presence. The service of presence must have been performed at any of the NHS approved agencies or an organization pre-approved by Mrs. Casey or Mr. Hussung between June 1, 2019 and February 21, 2020. Hours must be recorded on x2Vol within one week of completing service. A printed transcript of service hours must be attached to the application and turned in to Mrs. Casey by Friday, February 21, 2020.
Service of Presence means that the service involves directly spending time with and getting to know people who, for one reason or another, have been marginalized. For example, serving a meal to people at a shelter would qualify as service of presence, however, organizing canned goods for a food drive at your parish would not; neither would helping with a retreat or with Vacation Bible School, unless the members of your parish are mostly from marginalized groups.
Participation in three activities that meet regularly (two of which must be SLUH-related).
SLUH faculty members will evaluate the character of those candidates who submit the membership forms for the current school year. The Assistant Principal for Academics will evaluate each candidate for violations of academic integrity, and the Assistant Principal for Student Life will evaluate each candidate for discipline history for the current school year.
The SLUH Faculty Council will evaluate the candidate membership forms and faculty/administration evaluation forms to determine if each candidate fulfills the requirements for membership. The selection or non-selection of NHS members is finalized by the SLUH principal.
Letters informing candidates of this decision will be sent in late March.
Induction of new members will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at 7:00 PM in the Si Commons.
