LOYALTY TO FRIENDS

Pat made a lot of friends by being friendly without being fake. He was genuine, and not judgmental. Pat knew who he was and did not conform or sacrifice integrity or moral character to please others. Pat's friendships were very strong. He embodied the spirit of being a young man for others.
 

PERSISTENT WORK ETHIC

It took a lot of time and work to juggle Pat's academics, extra-curricular activities, friends and family, but Pat put in as much time as needed to manage it all. He had a strong commitment to school as well as a willingness to share his talents with the world.
 

TOUGHNESS & STRENGTH

Pat was a gifted athlete. He was physically strong, but even more impressive than his physical strength was the mental strength that he carried with him both on and off the field. He was determined to succeed in everything he did. He was courageous, brave and daring. In Pat's mind, he could accomplish anything.
 

LEADERSHIP

Pat was a leader amongst his peers. He was a trendsetter. He was not worried about what others thought of him. He would use humility and humor to respond to any naysayers. He would often stand up for others even when doing so was risky or difficult.

Patrick W. Boyce ’96 Memorial Scholarship Timeline 

1997/1998 — Greg Donovan '96 initiates the Patrick W. Boyce Scholarship which raises over $45,000 prior to 20th class reunion

Mid-2016 — Organized steering committee and created Mission, Vision, Purpose and Goals to revive class scholarship efforts

September 2016 — Small group from steering committee met with SLUH Advancement team to gain support and commitment for Mission and Vision for scholarship

October 2016 — Kicked off revival of scholarship at 20th class reunion, launched a SLUH web giving page and sent out a letter to engage entire class

June 2017 — Met first year giving goal of $40,000

November 3, 2017 — SLUH announces first ever scholarship recipient (Jaylen Sinclair '21)

November 20, 2017 — Class letter sent out on behalf of steering committee announcing the inaugural recipient of scholarship with thank you letter from Jaylen

December 5, 2017 — Small group from steering committee meet Jaylen and his mom and provide congratulations and personal commitment

February 2018 — Participated in SLUH February Frenzy and sent out email to class with video link from Jaylen

June 2018 — Met 2nd year giving goal of $40,000, increased class giving percentage to 35%

November 2018 — Class of 1996 participates in parent and alumni scholarship phonathon to help celebrate bicentennial and raise money for scholarships including our very own, and SLUH announces Go Forth Campaign launching $70 million capital campaign with $37 million in scholarships and accessibility

February 2019 — Participated in SLUH February Frenzy and announced increased annual giving goal of $55,000, and shared 2019 CASHBAH ad to raise awareness beyond our class

May 2019 — Thinking and planning meeting with class of 1996 over SLUH’s strategic priorities and class of '96 philanthropic history

May 2025 — 30-day initiative launched to finalize scholarship campaign

Dear Members of the SLUH Class of 1996,

I would like to thank you for your generosity and kindheartedness. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be recognized as inaugural recipient of the Patrick W. Boyce ’96 Memorial Scholarship and I am proud to be considered the first-ever Boyce Scholar.

In just my first semester, I have developed amazing friendships, and explored life-changing experiences.  I have loved the time I’ve spent at SLUH since Direction Days.  My first quarter can be summarized on the soccer field.  This experienced introduced me to the widespread, passionate school spirit at SLUH.  I was able to form a relationship with Coach Kesterson, who was also my summer school health teacher. Coach Kesterson helped me not only helped me grow as a player, but also a man for others and a Jr. Bill.  He held me to high expectations, and pushed me to new limits. His coaching led our team to a great 21-1-2 season.

During the season, I also met some of my best friends who share many things in common with me.  Now that the season's over, I’ve been able to spend more time doing homework and studying.  Furthermore, I now have mentor that I can go to for help during the school day in Dr. Kesterson.

In my brief time at SLUH, I have had learned and enjoyed so much.  These experiences would not be possible without your generosity and willingness to support me during this time of growth and development.

Thank you for helping me be a Jr. Bill, and allowing me the honor of carrying on the memory of your friend and classmate.

Mission
The mission of the Patrick W. Boyce ’96 Memorial Scholarship is to honor Patrick William Boyce by creating a timeless legacy for the distinctive qualities that he possessed, to provide opportunity for the formation of young men for others, and to inspire recipients, students and alumni alike in their own lives.

Vision
Pat was daring and had great conviction despite adversity and he was determined to succeed in everything that he did.  Our Vision is boldly connected to Pat’s approach to any challenge.  We believe Pat’s legacy has importance beyond those that he knew and touched personally and the1996 class motto challenges us to “Go and set the world on fire!”  In the spirit of Pat and the aspirations that we hold as a class, we believe this scholarship fund should be embraced by all alumni and can serve as a catalyst for promoting the underlying mission of SLUH.

Our vision is for the class of 1996 to come together as a beacon for others to follow.  This requires us to achieve a leading level of participation for giving.  Pat’s legacy inspires hope for the future and it also gives us a tangible purpose to reflect, in the way of St. Ignatius, and possess gratitude for the opportunities we have been given.  If the class of 1996 responds with enthusiasm, we believe other classes will be touched by both Pat’s legacy and our response.  We believe that the fire we possess will well up and spread across all alumni.

We are proud to elevate Pat’s legacy for this purpose and ultimately for the greater glory of God.  We hope that other classes can help us achieve our mission.  We believe that our goals are attainable, especially if we get the attention of others beyond our class.  As alumni, we are all connected, we all share the same opportunity and we all share the same commitment to ensuring the SLUH opportunity is available for young men indefinitely.  If we come together we will spread the fire.

With this fire, we believe many other classes can identify and share their respective purpose to give back.

Individually, our ability to make an impact may seem limited.  Collectively, our ability to make an impact can be profound.

Purpose
Patrick William Boyce inspires us, the Class of 1996 hopes to inspire others, in the hope that future recipients of this award will “Go and set the world on fire!”

Goals / Measurements of Progress
1) Individual student support: Celebrate Pat's legacy through a scholarship grant each year to an incoming freshman who possesses the character and qualities of Patrick William Boyce and demonstrates an unyielding courage to make an impact.  We also have a goal to provide a mentoring opportunity to each recipient during their time at SLUH.

2) Start the fire - Class of '96 participation: 40% or greater for class participation of giving directly to the Patrick W. Boyce ’96 Memorial Scholarship.

3)  Spread the fire - Alumni participation:  The Patrick W. Boyce ’96 Memorial Scholarship would benefit from any alumni participation.

4) Overall financial goal: Through generosity of the Class of 1996 and all alumni, our goal is to raise $300,000 to fully endow this scholarship program.
